Director: Russell Mulcahy. Producers: Peter S. Davies William N. Panzer and E.C. Monell Writers: Gregory Widen, Peter Bellwood and Larry Ferguson. Stars: Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, Clancy Brown, and Roxanne Hart. Soundtrack by Queen.
Released in 1986 this film was classed as a action/fantasy and filmed in some fantastically beautiful locations.
**THE PLOT** *MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS**
In the beginning of the film the viewer is taken into the past, back to 1518 when 'the Immortal' Connor MacLeod was born. Taking you through his first battle where he meets another of 'his kind' who seriously injures MacLeod, but somehow MacLeod manages to survive to the astonishment of his clansmen, who brand him a witch and banish him from his clan.
We follow MacLeod through his life, his marriage in 1540 to Heather (played by Beatie Edney), his meetings with other 'Immortals', like his friend Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobo's Ramirez (played by Sean Connery). Juan takes MacLeod under his wing, explaining about the quest and how other 'Immortals' will try and kill him. With this Juan then trains MacLeod in the art of sword fighting.
We watch as MacLeod wonders through his never ending life, settling in the U.S. after many adventures, (including a comical scene when a drunk MacLeod, during a duel, he is stabbed repeatedly with a sword but refuses to die, irritating his opponent).
When the film arrives in New York, 1985 there are only a few Immortals left in the 'Gathering', but only one can take the 'prize'.
MacLeod is now known as Russell Edwin and is waiting for his nemisis Kurgen, or Victor Kurgen (played by Clancy Brown). With more beheading going on it is not long before there are only two Immortals left to fight for the 'prize'.
There are more sword fights until only one Immortal survives to claim the 'prize', but as the decapitated bodies start to pile up in New York the police begin to investigate. Forensic expert Breda Wyatt (played by Roxanne Hart), is investigating when she encounters the not so pleasant Kurgen.
**IN CONCLUSION**
An all out action fantasy film with some fantastic swashbuckling scenes. The special effects are brilliant and fit in with the story line perfectly, the massive explosions after the sword fights have finished are not to over the top and the beheadings are not to gruesome.
If you're a Queen fan, ( I mean the band with the late Freddie Mercury not the lady with the crown and corgis), then the sound track from this movie will appeal to you, It was the main reason I watch the film initially. The music from the film includes 'Princess of the Universe', 'who want to live forever', 'a kind of magic' and others.
If you haven't seen this film yet then I recommend watching it as it is a classic and one you will never forget.
