Highlander 2...pap. Rubbish. A waste of the franchise. A dissapointing sequel. Some of the opinions you may very well have heard from fans of the series abou this, the follow up to the fantasty hack-em-up film that achieved quiet cult success on both sides of the atlantic.
And yo may well have watched it and thought the same. Because, in all honesty, the first release of this second film (confused yet?) was a bit on the rubbish side with hughe chunks of plot missing and lots of very strange editing that meant certain parts of the film were not in their right places.
To top it all, the plot changed the whole premise of the show form one about immortals who have lived for all time to that of aliens from the planet Zeist. Yes, I know what you're thinking. And I don't know how many of them they took either.
BUT DO NOT DESPAIR! Because it wasn't just the fans of the first film that thought this sequel was crap. The director and producers thought it was too, and so they've gone back into the studio and reedited the whole shebang, adding new material, restoring bits to where they should have been and removing all references to the planet Zeist.
And it really works! Okay, I'm not saying they've turned the film into a classic in the original mould, but it is so much better than the first cut that it really is worth a second look.
The plot - well it is the 21st century (honest) and the ozone layer has been depleted. In order to protect the planet from the sun, a shield has been built that covers the entore globe. It is maintained by a privately owned company (the Tories muct have been in government when it was built) and they are milking the public for tonnes of money for something which is no longer of any use - yes, in the time the shiled has been built the Ozone layer has repaired itslef (and many GreenPeace stafff got new jobs aswell).
Now, because Connor Mcleod, our hero from the first film and Mr Immortal himself, helped build the first shield, he feels it is his job to bring it down. At the same time, his arch enemy from deep in Earths past has returned to chop off his head and make him apologise for cheating at Scrabble. And so Connor has to kill his enemies and save the world - typical every day tasks for an immortal.
Sean Connery turns up here aswell, as he did in the first film (even though he was quite clearly killed there) and adds a little light relief, and a great deal of class to preceedings. He's excellent.
And so with a reasonably dodgy story, but a great reworking of the existin gmaterial and with an extra 15 minutes footage newly shot, this is well worth revisiting.
It's available on DVD with a documentary detailing the making of the new RENEGADE version, and it's well worth hunting down.
