Grace really gets her own High Society

Advantages: A good happy musical, a family film, funny.
Disadvantages: maybe slightlty dated, but still fun

~~ High Society~~

I have although, slowly been going through my collection of musicals, they needed an airing, some are still unopened. I am a bit naughty I buy these movies with the intentions of sitting down to watch them, but life takes over and the moment has gone, they end up being filed to watch one day.

So my film for this month is High Society, which is a comedy musical that opened at the Pantages Theatre, Hollywood ...
...Oscars.

High Society was the musical version of Philip Barry's comedy play The Philadelphia Story, which was in its day one of MGM's greatest comedies and starred Hollywood greats Katherine Hepburn, Cary Grant and James Stewart. Grace Kelly with her air of haughtiness was a perfect choice to play the part of debutant Tracy Lord, which is a part that was originally played by Hepburn, but as is this is a musical and Grace Kelly was ... more

Oh what could have been...

Advantages: Good to have this feel-good musical on DVD
Disadvantages: Deserves a Special Edition

...title for this review - High Society is a wonderful film, with a warm, feel-good atmosphere, but while it's nice to have on DVD, this movie could have supported a special edition, much like the recent SE of 'Singin' in the Rain'. The movie begins with the Lord family gathered at their Newport estate to celebrate the forthcoming wedding of Tracy, the ice-goddess daughter of the clan (the stunning Grace Kelly). The problem is, Tracy's father, Seth ...
...and Tracy's ex-huband lives right next door. CK Dexter Haven (Bing Crosby, as ever) is determined to win back the affections of his ex-wife, whom he is still in love with, but is hampered by the arrival of Mike Connor (Frank Sinatra, always a better actor than singer) and Liz Imbrie (Celeste Holm, at her comedic best), reporters who are covering the wedding in exchange for keeping Seth's story out of 'Spy' magazine. As she is affected by her attraction ...

High Society

Advantages: The characters, the music and the script
Disadvantages: None

High Society needs to be seen even if its just for the timeless 'what a swell party' scene with the legends that are Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby. It is not often these two greats sing together "we sing so rare." The great characters are my favourite element of the film, the music comes second and the script which includes some great lines comes third, for instance "shut up you fool" (Louis Calhern with a hangover talking to a bird singing in a ...

Girl interrupted movie review

Advantages: Great storyline, great actors!
Disadvantages: not exactly reflective of the book

considered "heavy going" to watch, and although its not exactly a chill out before bed movie I still find myself regularly scheduling in evenings to watch this classic. You will find humour, sadness and also a somewhat scary reality, that anyone of us could fall captive to mental illness, but also hope in that anyone of us could summon the strength Miss Kaysen found to cross back into what may be considered by society to be good mental health. I highly recommed that this be a part of everyone's film collections. The dvd contains some extra deleted scenes well worth watching, as well as interviews with Winona Rider and Susanna Kaysen herself, both talking about how it felt for Winona to portray this character. The film is approximately 2 hours long, with a well chosen soundtrack featuring the likes of Wilco and their song, "How to fight ...

Review of Girl, Interrupted (DVD)

What NOT to call your neighbour!

Advantages: Rudolph Walker is great, mocks those that are racist
Disadvantages: The racist language (from both sides) is hard to take at times

four. However, as I can't really remember the series at all (I'm not quite old enough, hurrah!), it didn't really matter to me - I just wanted to have a taste of what was on offer before I decided whether to buy the series in order. And from that point of view, they are more than adequately chosen. The main thing for which this sitcom is remembered, and what was most off-putting for me, is the racism. I love seventies sitcoms and own most of them on DVD, and nearly every one contains something highly politically incorrect, something I have learned to forgive because that was the way society was at the time, like it or not. However, this one particularly looks at the black/white divide and there is no doubt that there is some really disgusting racist language used - sambo, nig nog, darkie, paleface and white honky appear in nearly every ...

Give me a bacon sandwich

Advantages: the fashions
Disadvantages: the comedy

, just so long as they're rich she doesn't mind. Holly spends most of her time trying to find Mr Rich rather than Mr right and is blind to what is staring her in the face, Paul is truly the man for her not the rich 'Rats' & 'super rats' she has been chasing after. Paul learns a lot more about her past when her ex husband turns up and threatens to convince her brother, who she adores, to stay in the army unless she comes home with him. Paul knows she is completely lost & splits with his sugar mommy so he can commit to her. Holly isn't having any of this and continues her quest for a millionaire husband until she is embroiled in a scandal involving her 'friend' in sing sing. She had been unwittingly passing on messages to the mafia and now nobody in high society will touch her - only darling Freddy (Paul) Opinion ----------- I ...
