-------------------------- High School Musical --------------------------
What’s the big craze I was thinking to myself, everyone has seemed to have watched this but me and my family. Everyone things that it’s so good and it always gets brought up in conversation and I’m always stuck for words with it. That’s why I decided to go and get this DVD from my local Asda so I could see what everyone was raving about. The film was produced by the Disney channel and is in the long line of successful children’s films that they have produced only this one is a musical. So after getting this DVD and taking it home I put it in the DVD player straight away got some food and started to watch. To be honest it was nothing like I had ever expected and came to see why everyone was talking about it because some of the bits in the musical are really catchy and have you wanting more as any film should.
The main cast of the film is:
Zac Efron – Troy Vanessa Anne Hudgens – Gabriella Ashley Tisdale – Sharpay Lucas Grabeel – Ryan Alyson Reed - Ms. Darbus
There are a huge amount more characters in the DVD and if you would like to know them all then you should look yourself on the internet on a site such as www.imdb.com which is the biggest movie database site on the net. Zac Efron is the new up and coming movie star that has starred in some other Disney films as well as some of the more popular shows on television. The same applies for the other characters that appear in the list, they all have a reputation for being in the Disney films and programs and even some children’s shows such as drake and josh etc which is very popular on Nickelodeon. To drop straight in I think that these are not the best actors in the world
when they are alone performing on stage etc but once you put them all together it becomes a magical scene.
So for the plot then:
There is a basketball loving, crazy about sport boy, called Troy who is at a snowboarding party on New Years Eve where he is forced to sing on a karaoke with an educational, book loving, I love school girl called Gabriella whom later trade phone numbers in the hope that they would see each other again sometime, but we knew that this would never happen, but did we. Sooner or later, I’m not quite sure which one, but Gabriella ends up moving cities and by a miraculous coincident ends up in not just the same school but in the same class as the boy she performed the most beautiful duet with at the start of the film.
Although the two people lead totally different lives they still end up coming together in the end when they are both auditioning for the winter musical knowing that it is for the best that they let this secret talent loose. It does cause some discomfort with the parents and some of the other pupils at the school but good comes from it in the end. Well I am going to stop with the plot before I spoil it for the people that have not watched it.
The film is aimed at the younger population as it contains quite a simple plot and allows them to join in and sing and dance to the DVD. I thought this was excellent and allows for all of the watchers to enjoy it. Although I thought that the film is aimed at the younger generation I still think that most adults would like it as it is very good and you may also find yourself joining in with the singing and dancing with you children. As for the sound and the soundtrack for the film, this has got to be awesome because throughout the whole of it I was totally glued to the screen listening to all of the words etc this has got to be one of the best sing a long shows that I have ever seen. The songs that are played in the screening are:
1 - Start of something new 2 - Get'cha Head In The Game 3 - What I've Been Looking For (Sharpay and Ryan) 4 - What I've Been Looking For (Gabriella and Troy) 5 - Stick To The Status Quo 6 - When There Was Me and You 7 - Bop To the Top 8 - Breaking Free 9 - We're All in This Together
All of these songs are very good and I found myself putting the subtitles on so that I could sing along to the songs as well and since then I have also got all of the songs on my MP3 player and I listen to them occasionally. I find that all of the songs are very catchy and appeal to people of all ages as they seem so cheery and realistic so to speak. As for the quality of the film as it is a DVD it is DVD quality and most of you will know what to expect from that.
If you are a potential buyer reading this review then I think that you should go and get the DVD straight away because it is a great film and this particular DVD has lots of extras which are all part of the bargain which I will come to later on in the review. The reason that I would recommend it to a potential buyer as this is quite cheap now and it is an excellent film which all the family can join in on when singing the songs etc. its just totally great for everyone. Everyone that I know has seen this film and they have all said the same things. “Wow that’s great”, “Cool, one of the best Disney films I’ve seen” every single comment and conversation I have heard about this film has been the most positive that it can be.
The DVD contains some extras and special features; these include deleted scenes, learn the songs and dance moves. When viewing the extras there are several menus that you have to navigate through to get the different functions. The menus are called “Music and More”, “Backstage Disney” and “Scene Selection”. I have to say that I was not the best impressed with the extras as they were not really madder that well. You are able to learn the dance moves on the DVD but this becomes very hard as some of the dances are so complex and they don’t really break it down or explain anything they just seem to go ahead and do it as normal. I found that it was very hard to learn the dance moves and then thought I better give it a miss after making a fool of myself. The same goes for the songs that you are able to learn as the words appear on the bottom of the screen and change colour as they are being sung. This is also very hard unless you actually know the songs as the words seem to appear too late and you seem to be behind the actually song and it just gets really confusing. So if like me sand you cant learn the dance moves and you cant keep up with the words of the songs just get the normal film and then watch it a few times to learn the words to all of the songs as I now know all of the words because as I mentioned earlier I have all of the songs on my MP3 player and listen to them occasionally.
The Backstage Disney section allows for the user to see the making of the film which shows some quite interesting mistakes and how they actually made some of the scenes, but this does not last very long and I think it’s for about ten minutes certainly no longer than that.
So my overall opinion of the film is that it is very good and has mostly strong points other than the extras the product is totally excellent and I’m sure that there will be someone somewhere who will be able to do the dance moves and keep up with the songs first time, but that’s a challenge for them isn’t it. For the value of the purchase I must say that it is very good as I paid £12.99 for this film and I was totally satisfied by it as it is made so well. I know that it is aimed at the younger generation but hey even better if it catching the adults eye. If you were to go out and purchase this film now then it would most likely cost around the same as me at a price of £12.99 because it is the version with all of the special features and extras. The movie can be purchased from almost any good movie store such as blockbuster, HMV, these are all good retailers as well as places such as Asda and Tesco where you can virtually buy anything that you want.
So if I had to give this film a rating out if ten then it would have to be an eight as it is an excellent film and is very catchy to all generations. Don’t hesitate to go and buy this film.
Thank you for reading this review and I hope to be hearing from you soon.
