I'd not seen High School Musical, nor had I seen High School Musical 2, so there was no surprise that I hadn't made any plans to see High School Musical 3. Though when a friend offered to pay me in, I decided it would be worthwhile going to see; after all, I would never turn down a free cinema ticket!
Although it may have been a good idea to find something, even a little, about the first two films before I went in, I decided to not bother. Though for those of you who are in the same situation as me, and feel they wish to know about the other two, here is a brief summary of what I discovered purely from the internet; Troy and Gabriella meet at High school and fall in love. They also have a shared love for music too, when they audition for the school musical, alongside competitors Sharpay and Ryan Evans. They take part in shows and contests too, all the time miss High and Mighty Sharpay wanting to better everybody. (If anybody feels this is inaccurate...blame
the internet!).
In High School Musical 3: Senior Year, it is the final year for the seniors at high school, and they are all taking part in the school show as a sort of final way to have fun together. There's no surprise the super-talented Troy and Gabrielle bag the lead roles, but Sharpay is prepared to do anything to steal the light from Gabriella? Can she rely on the help from her new British 'assistant', Tiara. Whilst tackling the show and the yearbook, the seniors have to decide which colleges they want to. Will Troy's heart be set on basketball, or his dreams set in a different direction, perhaps somewhere a little closer to Gabriella?
I hadn't read anything about the plot before seeing the film either, so I was a little worried I wouldn't be able to follow it. Thankfully, this did not happen! The story was easy to follow, though not so simple that everything was predictable. It's quite unique too. I cannot compare it to the other two films, however I personally have not seen a film quite like it! It's certificated at U, which is most reasonable. There is nothing 'raunchy' about even the most romantic scenes between the characters, and you're most likely to hear more curse language from a mouse!
There's quite a lot that makes this film what it is, and I'd say without a doubt that part of it boils right down to the casting itself! Troy is played superbly by Zac Efron. Now, many people I know (all girls, I will add!) seem to find Efrom somewhat attractive, but me? Nope, I'm happy with my much-older Mr Tennant! Though I will admit Efron is one amazing actor, and a super singer at that too! Gabriella too is an amazing actress, played by Vanessa Hudgens. Not only is she an amazing actress, but I envy her voice! I doubt director Kenny Ortega (Hocus Pocus, Ally McBeal) could have bagged himself a girl more perfect for the role! The only actress I had heard of before High School Musical came about was Ashley Tisdale, who I know of from The Sweet Life of Zac and Cody, where she plays Maddie, a girl who is actually quite sweet and innocent. Her character of Sharpay defintely reflects her many talents when it comes to acting, as both characters are not at all alike.
Yes, the show would not be what it is without the superb cast, but as it is a 'Musical', you'd certainly except some splendid songs. Thankfully that is exactly what you are getting! There are many songs throughout the film, some new and some not. One of my favourites is Now or Never, which is actually one of the first songs we hear at the final 'ball game of the season. It has an incredible, catchy beat which you will be bopping along to for the rest of the day. I also really like I Want It All, sung by Ryan and Sharpay. It's all about Sharpay wanting fame and fortune big time. It's fantastically very much a 'showbiz diva' song, definitely a winner! One I cannot seem to get out of my head though is The Boys are Back, sung by Troy and Chad. It's an amazing song with a fantastic beat! I will not spoil the end song, but all I will say is that the buzz around the cinema is unforgettable!
What I can often find with films is that they tend to drag on and on, but this one was over before I knew it! Its just over an hour and forty, which is actually quite a lengthy film compared to most, however I was enjoying it so much, and you know what they say about flying clocks (!).
A superb film to say the least, and most certainly worth seeing if! If you have not seen the other two, do not worry, it is easy to pick up what has happened, and you will be as clued up as everybody else in no time! This may be aimed for youngsters, so this is the time for you to release your inner child!
