A bit about me - I love the cinema. From the latest blockbuster (dragged along by my 15 year old son), to my preferred arthouse films, I just enjoy the experience.
Update (May 2005) - my son is 19 and at Uni now! How time flies...

This film is worth checking out if you like tales where the girls make fun of the boys. It's not classic cinema, but it's a bit of fun.
Minnie Driver and Mary McCormack star as the two London-based best friends, who stumble into the world of bank robberies, blackmail, and ambushes. It is a little bit like Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, but also, as has been mentioned in several reviews, quite like a Bridget Jones version of it.
So, it's not that original then? Not really - the new slant is the Thelma and Louise style leads, but there have been so many British gangster films lately it's hard to see how any could be that original, and, another thing is, who this film's produced by. Mel Smith directs, and Kim Fuller is the scriptwriter (he also wrote SpiceWorld), so we are not talking trendy young things here, this film is the product of middle aged men, and it's sad, but I got the feeling that the characters they enjoyed producing most of all, and personally felt they could have most fun with, were the ones like the detective who's obsessed with house prices. In the end, though, the male characters, with the exception of Michael Gambon as the 'boss' figure, are not very successful. Without a doubt, the two female leads are the thing that make this movie worth watching.
Both girls have credible characters, with day jobs (Driver, as a nurse - the worthy end of the spectrum, and McCormack as an actor having to do cartoon voiceovers - the lowest of the low, almost, unless you count gangsters…) Most of the funny scenes involve the two of them - one of my favourites was where they are discussing what phrases to use when they ring the bankrobbers. I mean, what sort of swearwords should you use, after all?
There's a cringeworthy moment in the middle of the movie, where some tricksy footage (with the Sugababes' Overload playing in the background) makes you wish that a law could be passed saying that anyone who's ever made a pop videos should be banned from any involvement in a feature film.
When all's said and done, though, I enjoyed this movie. It's 100 minutes long, and passes very quickly.
... And watch out for Mel Smith's cameo appearance, in the queues at the railway station.
