I’ll be perfectly honest in saying I didn’t expect much from this. People saying it was the British Thelma & Louise put me off straight away (as if it would be, they said that about Beautiful Creatures too) and after aforementioned Beautiful Creatures (which wasn’t all that) I thought it would be more of the same. I was wrong.
To compare this to Beautiful Creatures isn’t really do-able….this is much more a comedy whereas Creatures is quite dark and serious…so although I preferred this to BC, it is different.
Two Women, Shannon (Minnie Driver) and Frances (Mary McCormack), go out on the drink as it’s Shannon’s birthday. As they’re out getting lashed a bank robbery begins to take place. The robbers have got a guy on the roof as lookout, Danny, (the guy from Human Traffic who gets caught spanking the monkey) who is a bit of an idiot. After the girls get in and the robbery is still in progress, they pick up Danny making a phone call to his girlfriend on Shannon’s boyfriend’s computer/scanner equipment which picks up transmissions in the area. The girls realise that he is involved in a bank job, take down his phone number (it appears on the computer) and try to tell the police…the cops have nothing to do with it and the girls pass out drunk.
Next day both girls see the news about the robbery. Frances decides to phone up Danny, demand some money or they’ll shop him.
Suffice it to say, things don’t go quite according to plan.
The rest of the film sees the girls trying to outsmart the robbers and pretty much only getting by through sheer luck…they are amateurs after all.
This is a funny film….genuinely laugh out loud moments occur rather frequently, which is good. The story may be a bit far fetched but then that’s the whole point really.
The leads are both very good but then most actresses could pull this off, it’s not too taxing.
Great comedy moments from two coppers trying to solve the bank job (the guy from Fast Show [not Paul Whitehouse] and the guy that used to be on Fist of Fun [who did the Simon Quinlak character]), both useless coppers who also get by on dumb luck.
Another good brit flick with good cast, loads of laughs in a somewhat OTT crime comedy action type thing…hard to find a genre for this one. Enjoy!
PS… Not too much of a Chick Flick lads, you should enjoy it too, I did.

I got free tickets to see this a couple of weeks ago and I must say it was better than I expected although it looks like a telefilm rather than something you would expect to see at the cinema.

Advantages: Would suit a good mix of tastes - comedy, action, adventure... Disadvantages: Suppose you could argue about cinema prices... but nothing else comes to mind!
