Shannon is a nurse with a pretentious and egotistical boyfriend. Frances is an unemployable American actress. Together they manage to overhear a phone conversation about a bank job taking place in Shannon's street. They take the information to the police, who aren't interested, so decide to blackmail the thieves. Unfortunately they have no idea what they're letting themselves in for...

When I discovered that the script was written by Kim Fuller, who was responsible for "Spice World" and "Miami 7", I was somewhat concerned that I was going to be subjected to puerile sight gags and people throwing pineapples at each other. Thankfully Kim seems to have grown up a bit since then and has delivered a witty script with plenty of lively banter and action-packed set pieces.

For once, women get involved in the action - admittedly they have no idea what they're doing, but they seem to muddle through somehow. And unusually for a London based crime caper, the city is bright and airy and it isn't always raining. It even manages not to look seedy.

The acting is of a high calibre, with Minnie Driver as Shannon and Mary McCormack as Frances striking sparks off each other. There is a fine supporting cast; Michael Gambon as crime lord Kerrigan, Danny Dyer as the unfortunate Danny and Mark Stephens of "Fast Show" fame as the dithering detective. Comedian Junior Simpson even makes a cameo as a drug dealer.

The comedic pedigree of the film is hardly a surprise when you consider that the director is none other than Mel Smith (of Alas Smith and Jone). I think we can finally forgive him for the debacle that was "Morons From Outer Space".

The action sequences are simple but effective, if somewhat unoriginal. But a nurse with a gun will always get my vote.

The film will always suffer comparisons with "Thelma and louise" and "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels", but is far funnier than the former and far less gratuitously violent than the latter.

This is probably the ideal first-date movie, with just enough action for the boys, enough female characters for the girls and plenty of one-liners to chat about afterwards.
