High Fidelity…Seen the Film and Read the Book!!
Just watched the film “High Fidelity” on Saturday night and although it was an all right film I much preferred the book.
The film starred John Cusack and I have to admit I am a fan of Cusack. Anyway it’s a nice sort of film about a guy who breaks up with his girlfriend and then looks back on his five most memorable split-ups. This then traced his girlfriends from 1972 – 1986, going from when he was growing up in his teens until he was in his late twenties.
This part is much better in the book and is spoilt a bit in the film, in the book I could relate more to the way in which he described going out with a girl for the first time, the first tries at sex and all that drinking, smoking and generally growing up phase. The film lacked all that.
Anyway the main character in the film is called Rob and he owns a record store that is mainly frequented by serious collectors and he has two odd characters working for him. They are called Dick and Barry and the shop is called Championship Vinyl.
The girlfriend that has broke up with Rob is called Laura and she plays the second main role in the film, which she plays well.
It’s an entertaining film and it traces the history of Rob’s misfortunes in love and then to his efforts in getting back with Laura, also he scores with this singer in the course of the film. The singer he met on a night out with Dick and Barry but he discovers she will never take the lovely Laura’s place.
The thing I liked about this film but more so with the book was that I could relate to Rob. Looking back at your teen years and that growing up process, the pain of that first rejection by a girl you love, that innocence you have at 16 or 17 when you trust someone with everything..
The book and of course the script for the film was written by Nick Hornby, he of the famous “Fever Pitch”, the story of an Arsenal fan, and of course “About a Boy”. Just out of interest, if you haven’t read “About a Boy”, get it as it is one of the best books I have read.
Catherine Zeta Jones makes an appearance in the film as “Charlie”, one of his ex girlfriends and she gives a good performance.
I will not tell you if Rob gets back with Laura, I will leave you to hire the film out for yourself but if you like a film that’s both funny and makes you think about yourself a bit then you can’t go to far wrong by hiring this out or if you have Sky it’s on Box Office at the moment.
Can I also add that the book made me laugh throughout and I would suggest if you are a book reader then buy the book first then watch the film.
Anyway thank you all for your read and hopefully your rate as well, take care as always…Your friend online……….
