proves it in spades. It's yet another underrated film for Johnston (along with such enjoyable popcorn flicks asThe RocketeerandJurassic Park III), dismissed by many critics but a welcome treat for anyone drawn to good ol'-fashioned movie excitement. In his first role since playing Aragorn in theLord of the Ringstrilogy, Viggo Mortensen brings handsome appeal to his low-key portrayal of Frank T. Hopkins, a real-life long-distance horse racer who, as the movie opens, has witnessed the appalling massacre of Native Americans at Wounded Knee in 1890. Drifting into Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, he agrees to compete, with his trusty mustang, Hidalgo, in "The Ocean of Fire," a treacherous 3,000-mile horse race across the Arabian desert. Toss in a bunch of conspiring competitors, a noble sheik (Omar Sharif), his lovely daughter (Zuleikha Robinson), and enough fast-paced danger to fill 133 minutes, and you've got a rousing, humorous, and lightly spiritual adventure that's a lot of fun to watch. It hardly matters that it's almost pure fiction (the real Hopkins was known by many as "a pathological liar"). More important is the love of movies and moviemaking that Johnston so delightfully conveys. --Jeff Shannon

...best long distance rider and Hidalgo the best long distance horse in the world.
An Arabian Sheik contests this claim however. He claims to have a far superior horse and demands that Hopkins and the show drop the title of worlds greatest. When you’ve starred in one of the most successful film series since Indiana Jones and Star Wars, then there must be any number of film roles available to you. For Viggo Mortensen however it seemed having become one of the stars of Lord Of The Rings he returned to choosing dodgy films. His track record before LOTR wasn’t exactly inspiring with films including G I Jane and the remake of Psycho. I thought that after this he would have had better judgement picking roles and for this reason decided that I wanted to see Hidalgo.
It’s based on the true story of Frank T Hopkins (Mortensen) and his horse Hidalgo. He is the best long distance rider in North America and when he’s not racing across the country he is employed by the US Army as a dispatch rider. After the senseless slaughter of a camp of native Americans, which he delivered the orders for he left the army and joined a travelling show. It was claimed that he was the best long distance rider and Hidalgo the best long distance horse in the world.

They refuse and that leads to the rest of the story, Hopkins is challenged to take part in the Ocean Of Fire race, a 3000 mile race against a number of Arabian riders including the Sheiks horse. Instead it is quite a slow paced movie, with brief glimpses of action, all of which were used in the films advertising. I found this to be a real disappointment as they had made it quite appealing in the adverts I’ve seen for it. It is quite clear to see why this didn’t seem to be in the cinemas for much longer than a week.
It comes from director Joe Johnston, who also brought us Jurassic Park 3 and Honey I Shrunk The Kids, which should speak volumes for this on its own. He worked with writer John Fusco to brink Frank Hopkins story to the big screen and although it may appeal to a few people the film doesn’t turn out that great. I don’t really have a problem with Johnston’s direction of the film, it just seems to lack something from the plot. There isn’t too much they could do about that though as it was based on a true story. I couldn’t help but feel however that maybe it was a story best left untold.
As I mentioned his direction wasn’t too bad. They didn’t use any unnecessary camera tricks, which seem to make an appearance in so many films recently. He seems to just stick to straight forward directing without any real surprises included, so from that point of view the simple solution is the best. The special effects are amazing but to be honest I wouldn’t have expected much less considering the director’s earlier jobs had included designing Yoda and Boba Fett for the Star Wars films. The inclusion of the Sandstorm and the swarm of locusts looks fantastic and rather real as well.
The main star and probably the only real name of any note is Viggo Mortensen. He raised the bar in terms of his performances in the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy and really falls way short of repeating that here. It doesn’t help him that the character isn’t one you really take to, but I felt that Mortensen was completely the wrong choice for this sort of role. He looks the part but doesn’t really steal the show. The casting is disappointing on the whole and apart from Omar Sharif the rest of the cast are really there just to fill the other roles.
It seems that the budget was blown on landing a big name star and the other roles filled with whoever they could get. As the sheik I thought Omar was quite good but just kept remembering him in the Parole Officer and how much better he was in that. The rest of the cast are pretty average and play their parts in the story really well. I just didn’t seem to feel for any of the characters and normally with this kind of film I’d have thought it best to at least make the lead character someone people can take to. Instead the characters don’t seem very interesting or worth caring about and this lets the whole film down.
The soundtrack fits in nicely but by the time I heard the first piece of music I’d given up caring about the film. The direction was pretty reasonable but the story, characterisation and casting really let down the tale of Frank Hopkins. There is the basis of a pretty good film here but it ends up being a massive let down. Id really feel guilty recommending this to anyone. I’m just hoping Mortensen has made a few better choices with his next few films.

Quick review of Hidalgo (DVD)
Hidalgo is inspired by, not based on, a true story about an ancient, dangerous horse race set in Arabia, open to various aristocrats. Hidalgo is the horse and Frank Hopkins (Viggo Mortensen) its partner. Frank is mixed race American and a Pony Express Courier, denying his Native roots because it is safer. The film contrasts savagery from the Americans, English and Arabians with victimised Native Americans. Every scene had it's purpose in progressing the plot, it's beautifully filmed and is very well acted out. Hidalgo and Frank are the underdogs as others conspire against them but they overcome the long haul. DVD has 3 bonus features; a behind the scenes, info on Frank Hopkins and a computer-only presentation 'America's First Horse'. Length: 136 minutes. ...

Advantages: Based on a true story Disadvantages: Boring, clichéd, insubstantial
...honest I didn't go into Hidalgo with anticipation, and in the early stages at least, I didn't see any need to rectify my decision. What I saw was a cringingly amateurish atttempt to emulate a cowboy film, with poor acting and exasperating characters.
Fortunately after a while the main character, insipidly portrayed by Viggo Mortensen, is thrust upon a race throughout the Arabian desert. This is where the film picks up as you start to accept what ... ...cliché is unconvincingly catered for, from the sandstorm , to the monicle clad assistant, with the ridiculous tache~come on~. You just get the feeling you've seen it all before, rendering a film which isn't bad (Some good acting on Omar Sharif's part) but there is really no incentive to watch this film. Ultimately forgettable. ...

NAME OF FILM: Starsky and Hutch
BACKGROUND
A remake of a great 1970?s TV cop series, this film (based on the series) follows Starsky and Hutch being forced to become partners in the police force. Before the DVD started the film, there were adverts for The Lady Killers, Hidalgo, Alias Season 2 on DVD, The Waterboy, Down and Out in Beverley Hills and Tin Men to name but a few.
PLOT
They join forces and with help from Huggy Bear, a slick street snitch, are in hot pursuit of a dealer who invents a non-detectable illegal drug. There are cameos from the original Starsky and Hutch, but don?t blink or you?ll miss it! Plenty of action scenes especially with the car. Some sexual, drugs and violence scenes but not excessive ? I can see why it got a 15 rating, though.

DVD Description
A breathtakingly photographed, epic western like none produced for decades, HIDALGO recounts the life of legend Frank T. Hopkins (Viggo Mortensen). Set in the 1800s, this family film chronicles the triumphant victory won by Frank and his mustang Hidalgo in the Ocean of Fire, an often-fatal competition in which the best riders and thoroughbreds race across Middle Eastern deserts. For Frank, who is known in the west for his prowess as a Pony Express rider and the winner of long-distance horse races, the lure of the Ocean of Fire is not only the $100,000 purse but also the clear challenge--both of which prove irresistible, and inspire him to travel across the world for this life-altering experience. With sweeping landscapes that evoke John Ford westerns like STAGECOACH and THE SEARCHERS, HIDALGO features enough racing, rivalry, and romance to befit any action film. But the race also provides a vehicle for the story of Frank forgiving himself for his participation in the Wounded Knee slaughter and accepting his part-Indian ancestry. The film's message, highlighted in a particularly moving scene where Frank invokes the spirits of his Native American ancestors, is that the key to happiness is accepting yourself as you are.
