Review of Hero, available to buy at play.com for £4.99
Hero has to go down as one of the best films ever made, if just for the Cinematography alone. It is visually spectacular and the use of colour is amazing. I really love these eastern martial art epics but i can assure you even if YOU don't you will still love Hero.
It stars Jet Li as a nameless warrior brought before the king to explain how he defeated the 3 most feared assasins in the kingdom, Broken Sword(Tony Leung), Flying Snow(Maggie Cheung) and Sky (Donnie Yen), all of which were thought to be after the king himself.
The film is generally Jet Li telling the king the story of how he defeated the 3 assasins, but not all is as it seems and the king has his own suspicions about why the nameless warrior is sat before him.
As the nameless warrior tells his story you see it visually and it is just stunning, the cinematography from Christopher Doyle is mind blowing and the use of colour leaves you wandering why more of this isn't done in movies.
Also the combat choreography is flawless, i just can't explain in words how magnificent this movie is.
The direction is superb, the score is superb there is just nothing bad to say about this movie.
The scene where Jet Li fights Broken Sword is just stunning, as they fight over a lake of water, the camera slows right down to show a single drop of water being hit between the 2 swordsmen like a game of tennis, the way this is shot is simply breathtaking, and its the small details like this that make such a huge impact on the viewer.
And the scene where Flying Snow fights Moon(broken swords, servent girl played by the great Ziyi Zhang) is also breathtaking, the use of colour in this scene is the best of the movie, as they fight in striking red gowns against a background of stunning trees, with bright yellow/orange autumn leaves........it may not sound that great when i try to describe it but you really do have to see it to believe it.
I can only imagine what this will look like on a hi-def plasma when and if it comes out on blu-ray, i will certainly be getting it straight away if it does.
You really have to see this film, even if you don't like martial arts films i gurantee you will love it and appreciate it for what it is, a stunning movie, with stunning direction, stunning cinematography, stunning choreography and an awesome score.
I loved Crouching tiger and House of Flying Daggers which was made after Hero, but Hero stands head and shoulders above them both.
10/10
Summary: An martial arts epic, that will have even not martail art fans begging for more!!
