First of all the Synopsis:
Hellraiser: Inferno (Dir. Scott Derrickson, 2000): A shady L.A. detective (Sheffer) finds himself lost in a darkly nightmarish world of evil when he solves the mysterious puzzle box that releases the diabolical demon Pinhead! As those around him begin to meet tragic fates, he sets out to conquer the horrifying Pinhead and escape eternal hell!
Hellraiser: Bloodline (Dir. Kevin Yagher, 1996): Spanning three generations, this horrifying story chronicles the struggle of one family who unknowingly created the puzzle box that opened the doors of Hell - setting the diabolical Pinhead free to spread evil here on earth! Now, the family must fight to slam those doors shut again...but not before Pinhead wages one of his fiercest and most frightening battles ever!
Bloodline: In this fourth gripping installment of the Hellraiser series, we are treated to the story of the Lament Configuration (or Lemarchand's Box or whatever you call it). It involves demons, Pinhead, some French people, architecture and outer space. Pretty good deal.
This film is my favorite in the Hellraiser series. By itself, there isn't much going on. I can understand why many think this film is weak. If I just watched it without the entire series, I would be like, "what the heck?" But I think this really ties the first four films together, explaining how everything fits.
I have read reviews that say the film is inconsistent and that it doesn't line up with the other films. I say hogwash. The film makes perfect sense. And it lines up with the others just fine. I guess you could say things like "how did the box get from x to y", but I think it's pretty clear. The French guy had it, then it went into circulation, then the Cottons had it in parts 1 and 2, then the news reporter in part 3, and she buried it in the cement where it was pulled out this time. What's not to understand? I could say the space aspect was cheesy. Leprechaun has been to space, and later Jason Voorhees went to space. Others probably did, too, that I can't think of offhand. But unlike Leprechaun, this made sense... it was actually central to the plot and could not have been done on Earth in any conceivable manner. So the space thing is not so bad.
Inferno was a very good movie. The disturbing thing is the role of pinhead. In all other movies he is a messenger of ultimate pain an desperation, an active tormentor of souls, so in his role he is very disposable this time. This story doesn't need "Hellraiser" written on it's label to become a success. On the other hand it has more similarities with the book than Hellraiser 2, 3 and 4. Good actors, some good SFX, a dark, violent atmosphere and an entertaining story sum up to one of the best sequels for a long time.
The dissapointing thing with the release it that it doesn't haven't any extras at all on the DVD, big shame!! You can get the DVD for around £9 which is quite good in my opinion for two films.
