much in school and long before my career as a critic began, I knew somehow that I was witnessing theatrical history. Even as that callow youth, I was certain that Carol Channing had been born to play the role of Dolly Gallagher Levi, the meddling turn-of-the century New York widow who had been adapted from Thornton Wilder's straight play The Matchmaker. Channing has proved me right by playing the role ever since, of course, miraculously only improving with age. Beyond Dolly herself, however, the musical emitted a synergistic exuberance (at least five years before we used the word "synergy"). The supporting cast, including David Burns, Eileen Brennan, and Charles Nelson Reilly, were terrific. Herman's tunes and lyrics were sublimely crafted both to create their characters and stand alone. (The title song took on a life of its own.) The show's designers, librettist Michael Stewart and director Gower Champion, combined to transport the audience to 60 years earlier in little old New York. This wasn't all just my opinion: Hello, Dolly! won a record 10 Tonys. The original cast recording can still take you to that other time and place, even if you didn't see the original show. But, at the risk of offending my inner adolescent, the 1994 revival, naturally starring Channing, was even better--both on stage and on disc. --Robert Windeler

Fabulous widow Dolly Levi whilst teaching dance classes (amongst other things) makes her living meddling in others lives. Matchmaking being her speciality.
However when her new client 'half a millionaire' Vandergelder books her to find him a wife of his own to tend to himself and his home dolly decides the only woman right for him is of course, Dolly herself.
Dolly convinces Vandergelder the perfect woman for him is in new york city and takes him and his two assistants to the big Apple.
Howerver, on arrival, Vandergelder's intended is kept away from him , much to his annoyance. Dolly decides that his two clerks are perfect for the miliner and her assistant and love blooms!
Horace Vandergelder does storm off but is soon caught up in the whirlwind that is Dolly LEvi and is once again convinced that a beautiful heiress would be perfect for him, and they arrange to meet at the posh Harmonia Gardens later that evening.
Of course what he doesnt know is that Dolly has already sung of her love for him, telling us of her intention to nwed him and spread his money around !
At the Gardens that evening Dolly makes her entrance to the ever famous 'hello Dolly' which apparantly took 1 whole month to film that scene alone!
After some unfortunate events they all end up in night court!!
After everyone professes their love for each other, except of course grumpy horace and dolly, they are let free, as the only crime they have commited is love.
Vandergelder returns to his home but soon realises after loosing his two clerks to love and marriage that he indeed needs Dolly in his life.
B ut things would be too simple for it to end there. After everything she has done to secure Horace as her husband, when he professes his love she isnt sure!!!!!!!
You will have to watch the ending to see how this love story pans out as i would hate to ruin the ending for you.
This is a single disc dvd with no extra's, only the standard options.
The over all standard is fantastic and Barbera Streisand brings her ever fabulous self to this role in a way no one else could have done. You truly believe she is the brassy matchmaker and her voice is at its peak in some of the wonderful songs.
The charachter of Horace can be somewhat anoying, but then he is a grumpy old man that you wonder why dolly really wants to be with such a thing.
The Three young couples are typical musical theatre youngsters and do a wonderful job. The amount of main charachters that are women in this show is excellent for today when so many musicals are male dominated. An excellent one for school productions with secondary schools i think.
I hope i have included everything you would need and that you enjoy my review, tho i apologies for typing errors and poorly written sentences. I think too fast to type and above is the result.
Enjoy the film, i definately reccomend it (particularly the dance sequences)
...the most famous musical songs, Hello Dolly. Which i am sure anyone will agree is just fantastic. The cameo role of Louis Armstrong is a great treat and i am sure you will be playing the songs over and over again. This film/Musical is one that stays in your head for weeks. A great buy and a great experience. Sometimes the story does need pushing along a bit and Barbara has alot of screen time which can get a bit tedious. ...

Advantages: Fine score, brilliant cinematography, goof performances. Disadvantages: A few odd choreographic moments.
One of Broadway's most legendary musicals (and possibly the only one with both a comma and an exclamation mark in the title), "Hello, Dolly!"s sumptuous Hollywood adaptation is surprisingly faithful to the stage original. Most of the material which differs from the Dolly seen on Broadway and the West End it taken from Thornton Wilder's play The Matchmaker on which the stage musical was itself based. Heading the cast is Barbra Streisand, who is really far too young to play the character of widowed Dolly Levi; she also plays Dolly far too 'Jewish', as the character is supposed to have married into a Jewish family rather than being a jewess herself. However, neither of these things seem to matter when it comes down to it - she is somehow convincing and throws herself into the role with incredible energy. The supporting players are more ...
