Hellboy is another foray into the genre of comic book films, hold on though, this one is actually quite good. Very good in fact.
Ron Perlman plays Hellboy, a demon summoned by the Nazis during the final days of WWII. The Allies raid the camp where the ceremony is taking place and find what the Nazis thought would bring about the end of the world. Joining the Allied forces, Hellboy eventually grows to adulthood, serving the cause of good rather than evil.
This really is Ron Perlmans 'Godfather' role. Watching him play this witty, funny but slightly childish demon you can't imagine anyone doing a better job, it is casting at its very best. Hellboy is aided by Abe Sapien, a fellow 'freak' who can only be described as half man, half fish, and Liz Sherman, a girl who can manipulate fire. All these actors have great chemistry together, which is important as it's the backbone of the story. They play off each other well and bring a lot of depth to their roles.
Guillermo Del Toro is a master of taking you away from this world and completely immersing you in his own twisted fairy tale universe, and he does this with great effect here. Guillermo creates a world you never want to leave, full of fantastical monsters and psychotic madmen.
This is probably my favourite comic book film and I would highly recommend it to anyone. You would never guess going into it that you would empathize with a giant, cigar chomping demon with a tail and a penchant for cats, but you do.
