HellBoy 2. ************
A nice film that lives up to the success of the first.
Hellboy a creature from another realm found by Professor Broom in the first film and brought up by him as his own son.
This film begins by laying out the premise of the movie by having John Hurt read a story to a young Hellboy just before bedtime on Christmas Eve.
Man wished to expand his dominion over there entire earth but king Balor of the Elfin underworld is not happy with this and is offered an unstoppable army of golden warriors that will never tire and would kill mercilessly. He mistakenly accepts the offer and is given a golden crown to rule the army. After many battles and slaughter the king regrets his decision and decides to break the crown into 3 parts. The parts are separated never to be reunited.
And that is where our story starts……….
With fantastic CGI and non stop action from this point on makes for a wonderful popcorn/ blockbuster of a movie.
All the original cast are here, from Abe, the 'Fish' man, Liz the 'Fire' Girl and of course Hellboy. This time their boss, Agent Manning, is actually on their side!
The Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defence (BPRD) are finally revealed to the public much to Big Reds delight. Now they can work out in the open but the public don't take to Hellboy as he had hoped. The rest of the gang are not happy at being outed. A new boss comes in to run the crew and look after Hellboy, an ectoplasmic being in a containment suit. Ok it's starting to get a bit far fetched now but then the whole movie is slightly off the map. The Troll market takes weirdness to another level, hidden away behind a huge door and you can see the influence of Pans Labyrinth.
Meanwhile the prince of the Elf underworld wants to control the 'Golden Army' and rule the world, so sets about obtaining the 3 pieces of the golden crown. One lies in the human world, one around his father's waist and the last around his sister's waist. He will use all the evil and despicable creatures at his disposal to achieve his goal of complete domination of the Earth.
I won't go into the story much further as some people mark you down for giving too much away, needless to say the movie has a few twists along the way, great visuals and superb action sequences.
Cast: Ron Perlman as Hellboy (aka Big Red) Selma Blair as Liz Sherman (Hellboys Girlfriend) Doug Jones as Abe Sapien Jeffery Tambor as Tom Manning (Hellboys boss) John hurt as Professor Broom Hellboys Cats as themselves. Luke Goss as Prince Nuada (yes from BROS) Anna Walton as Princess Nuala
The tooth Fairies are particularly nasty little beggars. With some gruesome scenes younger children might find disturbing.
They acting was, well ok. It was as good as it could be when most of the cast are hidden by lots of costumes and prosthesis.
The story is well written and to be honest I did enjoy it.
It was no Green Mile or Shawshank Redemption but then it wasn't meant to be.
You will enjoy it once but will probably not watch it again.
Greg.
