Shot in black & white, this is truly a 'knife-edged' 1950's film that is full of atmosphere and drama. The fast-paced driving scenes are excellent and well filmed for the era in which it was made, although they do look slightly dated now when compared with modern film effects.

Tom Yateley, (Stanley Baker; the main character in the film), fresh out prison, arrives at Hawlett's, a ballast transport company, looking for work. The nature of the work is hard and dangerous - drive fast, take risks, get the job done and earn your money - whatever it takes! He takes a hair-raising trial run, set by the owner of the company played by William Hartnell. Tom passes his initiation, after a couple of 'near misses' and gets the job - and this where his troubles begin!
William Hartnell's acting is typical William Hartnell - outspoken, straight to the point.
Stanley Baker acts extremely well throughout the film and handles the dialogue with ease, making the character very believable.
Patrick MacGoohan's performance is outstanding as he plays the part of 'Red' to the limit; chucking the Dodge truck around as if he had been doing it all his life.
Herbert Lom plays a mild-mannered Italian who hates 'Red' with every bone in his body. His performance is not outstanding in anyway, just the average Herbert Lom, but without his contribution the film would be lacking something.
Sean Connery plays a minor role, and at times seems awkward with his acting, making it sometimes a little embarrassing to watch.
The supporting cast which feature such actors as Alfie Bass, Sid James, and David McCullum, as Tom's crippled brother Jimmy, provide a good arena for Stanley Baker and Patrick MacGoohan to work in.
The film is fast-paced throughout and has stood the test of time, making it one of the classics of the 1950's.
The location shots were filmed on the Colnbrook by-pass in Buckinghamshire, and at Stanwell Moor in Middlesex.
