Heat is probably one of the best cops and robbers films ever made and fans of the film will tell you they have watched it dozens of times like me. Director Michael Mann is no stranger to crime films as he has been involved with CSI and Miami Vice. Robert De Niro and Al Pacino star and are supported by a dozen good actors in the supporting cast including Val Klimer. The film opens with the carrying out of a violent armed robbery by Neil MaCCauleys gang(Robert De Niro). The robbery goes wrong and and the gaurds are shot to remove witnesses. The gang get away with bearer bonds used by a crooked banker to launder drug money. MacCauley blames gang member Waingrove for the robbery going wrong and tries to kill him. Tough cop Al Pacino is soon on his trail. He is also investigating a series of murders of prostitutes (this later turns out to be Waingrove). He has marital problems in his life. The film touchs on the human side of relationships of cops in the firing line and aternates between them and the lives of the gang members who also have problems. What makes the film exceptional is the portrayal of the human side of MacCauley (the bad guy) and Pacino as the detective. MacCauley tries to sell the bonds back to the owner but they doublecross him and try to kill him. Waingrove then helps them to infiltrate the gang and they inform on MCCauleys planned bank robbery. This leads to the shootout the film is famous for outside the bank. 2 of the gang are killed and MCCauley makes his getaway with the shot survivor. McCauley then goes after the informer,Waingrove and the bearer bonds owner and kills all of them. The film is not short on violence. In the end Pacino chases down De Niro and kills him in a gun battle. The script is full of excellent one liners, watch out for the scene with Al Pacino's television. Here are also memorable scenes, the famous meeting between De Niro and Al PAcino in a resteraunt, the shootouts, the getaways, the doublecrossess all add up to 3 hours entertainment. If you become a fan you will definetely want to buy this.

I see you've posted this as a DVD review, but you've not mentioned the DVD features. Are there any extras? If so, what are they and are they any good? If you add to this, or if you change it to be posted as a "Film Only" review, which can be done by accessing "edit review" above the review and changing the drop down menu under the "Which format are you reviewing?" question at the bottom, please let me know and I'll re-rate.
