Just look at the ingedients of this movie.Firstly you have the director Michael Mann. Then you have my two favourite and probably the best two actors of recent times, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. They are more than abley supported by Val Kilmer and John Voigt to name but two. Then add a great storyline together with one of the best and most atmospheric music scores I've ever heard. The result is a 2 hour 40 minute masterpiece.
The story revolves around a professional gang of armed robbers led by De Niro playing cat and mouse with the local Police force, led by Pacino.
Both of the leading characters are wonderfully portrayed as being totally dedicated to the life they have chosen.Thy are both at the top of their line of work and as the story unfolds it becomes obvious that only one of them will succeed.
Although for me De Niro and Pacino steal the show, the support cast do a great job and it unusual for so many characters to be developed in one film.
Add a bit of double crossing and relationship breakdowns and the film gives room to a whole host of superbly scripted scenes.
The focus of the film is the gang led by De Niro attempting to do one last heist before contemplating retirement. Pacino on the other hand tries to pull out all the stops in an attempt to prevent it taking place, while at the same time dealing with his own marriage breakdown.
Some of the action scenes are quite simply the best I've ever seen. The Bank robbery scene has yet to be bettered, in my eyes anyway.
Some of the one liners are very hard hitting as remarks made from the heart sometimes are.
For example, Pacinos wife, after having yet another evening ruined by his dedication to work and realising that their relationship is doomed, comes out with "you don't live with me, you live among the remains of dead people"
Later on Pacino comes home to find his wife has another man in their house. In a fit of anger he says to the other man "you can ball my wife if she wants you to, you can lounge around on her sofa, live in the house if you want to but you do not get to watch my TV"
I understand that these two scenes out of context may not appear particuarly wonderful but they make the characters what they are.
Likewise, De Niro, the consummate professional, lives a very disciplined life in order to stay one step ahead. In the famous 'coffee shop' scene between him and Pacino, where for me watching films doesn't get much better, he explains to Pacino how he lives his life. He says "A guy told me one time, don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not wiling to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat(police) around the corner".
As you will have gathered I enjoyed this film.If you decide to watch it, do yourself a favour, plonk yourself down for the duration of the film and I feel sure you won't regret it.If you're in and out the room you will miss little gems in script and acting which will not do the film justice.
