I bought a pack of four quiz DVD’s recently from a shopping channel, and this was one of them.

~What is it?~

This is an interactive Quiz DVD. You simply put the DVD into a standard DVD player, and answer the questions using the buttons on your remote control. This particular game is a celebrity quiz, made by celeb magazine Heat.

~How do you play?~

The first thing you are asked is if you want to play with single or multi player or if you want to read the instructions. I have played this both on my own and with friends, and the concept of the game is the same both ways. You can chose up to four players.
Once you have chosen the number of players, you are then asked to select a character. There are eight different celebrity characters to choose from. They are:
Reality TV Star, Leading Man, Rock Star, Starlet, Chat Show Host, Super Model, Footballers Wife or Diva. Each option has its own little cartoon character. Which character you chose doesn’t seem to have any bearing on the game.

The object of the game is to get to the top of Heat Towers. Heat Towers are a 26-storey building, with floors Z (ground floor) through to A (Top floor). You start as a ‘Z-lister’ on the bottom floor and the more questions you answer correctly, the higher you climb in the towers, until ultimately you reach floor A, making you an A-lister.

How many floors you climb at one time is selected randomly before you answer your question. If you answer a question incorrectly, you reveal a skeleton in your closet and go back down to the floor you previously came from. Once you have incorrectly answered three questions the game is over.

~The Questions~

On each floor there are up to three different categories to choose from (although some floors only have one or two categories). Examples of some of the categories are ‘Divas’, ‘Heat’s biggest stars’, or ‘love and stuff’. You also have a category named ‘career move’ which sometimes comes up. Selecting this category is a bit of a gamble as sometimes it will say ‘move up three floors without answering a question’ or other times ‘your opponent moves up five floors if you get the answer wrong.’

All questions are based on celebrity trivia. The DVD was released not long before Christmas last year so most of the questions are quite up to date, but I could see that they will become more irrelevant over time. I read a lot of celebrity magazines (ironically Heat isn’t usually one of them), and read the entertainment sections of various websites so on the whole I found the questions pretty easy although there are some ridiculously difficult ones thrown in. All questions are multiple choice, and you simply select the answer and press enter on your remote. They are also timed, although I’m not sure how long you get to answer each one.
There are over 1000 questions, and I’ll give you a brief idea of them below:
‘What is the name of Kerry Katona’s new man?’
‘What is Renee Zelwegger’s star sign?’ This is one of the aforementioned ridiculous questions!
‘Who was arrested after protesting up a tree over the closure of a farm?’

~Price~

I paid £12 for four DVD’s from bid tv, making this £3, which is great value for a cheap night in. It is available on Amazon.co.uk for a whopping £16.98 or play.com for £16.99, although if you choose to buy a second hand version you can get one for a lot cheaper.

~Overall opinion~

Between each level you must press the OK/Enter button on your remote to see how many floors you are going up. This then shows how many floors and has a graphic of the lift moving up the building before showing you your category options. I find that this part of the DVD is quite unnecessary and makes it a lot more long-winded than it needs to be.
The questions themselves aren’t too difficult for someone who is quite into the whole celebrity culture, but obviously I suppose it depends on your knowledge of the subject. Overall it’s quite enjoyable to play, and is more fun playing with other people than on your own. I think it would probably be a good gift for someone too as it’s quite different.
