insightful critique of the US's cataclysmic involvement in Vietnam. The film exposes the duplicitous nature of the American government, obsessive in its quest to squelch Communism and advance its own imperialist agenda, documented here in a media-savvy trail of propaganda ranging from archival footage, excerpts from press conferences, newsreels, and clips from jingoistic Hollywood war pictures. Director Peter Davis also uses damaging interviews (including disturbingly racist comments from US soldiers and General William Westmoreland), pop music from the period, and material he shot himself in Vietnam to create an indelible visual essay against war. Eschewing narration, the film has a cinema verite style, which gains its power from juxtaposition and the severity of its images. Released only two short years after the January 1973 agreement that brought home U.S. troops, the film stands as one of the strongest films condemning the war and the America's involvement in it. HEARTS AND MINDS's title derives from a now-infamous speech given by former President Lyndon Johnson in which he stated, 'The ultimate victory will depend on the hearts and minds of the people who actually live there'.
Advantages: An excellent award winning drama, based on a true story. Disadvantages: None!
My Reason For Purchasing A Beautiful MindDVD.
I wrote this review a year or so ago for another review site which has since closed. I thought I would upload it here as A Beautiful Mind is one of my favourite Drama films ever and I just wanted to recommend it and give some opinions on it. There is quite a few reviews already about it, but I just wanted to give my two cents worth also.
A Beautiful mind is one of my favourite Russell Crowe Movies. I actually like this better than the movie Gladiator. Well I watched this film a few years ago at the Movie house and I enjoyed it so much, that I bought it on DVD when it first was released. I have watched it several times over the years and each time I do, I love it more and always seem to pick up on something I missed in the film the previous time I watched it. This really is ...
Advantages: A great insight to what it's like to live with a mental disorder Disadvantages: none
Firstly, I?m going to try so hard not to give too much of this film away! It?s a really good watch if you don?t know much about it because that?s what makes this a brilliant film. I first watched this film not knowing hardly anything about it and when I think back it made the film more enjoyable to watch. A Beautiful Mind is based on a true story of John Forbes Nash, Jr. also based on the biography ?A Beautiful Mind? by Sylvia Nasar.
A Beautiful Mind directed by Ron Howard and produced by Brian Grazer tells the journey of John Nash (Russell Crowe) dealing with a mental disorder (I?m not going to tell you which) which had gone un-diagnosed for many years, besides from this Nash is an extremely talented mathematician who believes that there is a mathematical solution to everything. The film starts off with Nash at Princeton University ...
Advantages: Creepy, good adaptation Disadvantages: No extras on DVD, but this is only a disadvantage if you like them, I don't
Sitting here with a spare couple of hours, well having run out of other ways to procrastinate and still having no motivation for my essay (as is happening now...), I raided my DVD collection. I noticed a DVD called Presence of Mind which I remembered buying, but haven't watched in ages, so I decided to remedy the situation.
Presence of Mind is based on the Henry James novel Turn of the Screw, one of my favourite ghost stories.
**History**
This adaptation was released in England in 1999. I was surprised to find that this film is Spanish, it's acted in English and has British actors, but the production companies (Enrique Cerezo Producciones Cinematograficas, Television Espanola, Canal + Espana) are Spanish. The producer, and writer of the screen play, was Antoni Aloy. The film was released in Spain as El Celo, in 2001.
