Heart Of America (DVD)

Advantages: Thought provoking, quirky
Disadvantages: Not as funny as its made out to be

...Recently purchased this DVD and decided to write a review, although it was released a good few years ago. I Heart Huckabees is not at all what I expected it to be, although I did still enjoy it. Personally, i dont remember much advertising for the film when it was released in 2004, but from the DVD cover and summary I thought it would be a light-hearted comedy, similar to a "chick-flick",. The plot revolves around a man named Albert, a nature lover who is trying to stop the development of another chain store opening named Huckabees. After seeing the same stranger, a tall African man, seemingly by "coincidence", three times in different locations, he seeks the help of two "existential detectives" to help make sense of these coincidences. Advantages: Easy to watch, Good Cast
Disadvantages: Not overly interesting plot

...the separated couple together at the junket and playing nicely in front of the press. In the hope the press will focus on the couples personal lives and not the fact the actual film is not ready to be aired, as slight nutty and eccentric director, Hal Wiedmann (Walken) is not prepared to show it yet. Que lots of dramas and manic situations as the couple try to co exist while hating each other, not helped by the problem of Eddie falling for Gwen's sister/assistant Kiki (Roberts) The Characters --------------------- I thought this film benefited greatly from having such a string and well known cast. Although the script and story are slightly hot and miss in places, at least the acting was up to a decent standard. John Cusack plays the heart broken, confused and slightly mental role very well, to be honest there are by no means any oscars... Read review

Advantages: Fabulous acting and beautiful cinematography
Disadvantages: possibly length

.... Joe's mother also focuses prominently in the second part of the programme. Whilst Angels in America is compelling in dealing with the relationships of the main characters and the subtlities involved in human interaction, it also has a whole other level when Prior possibly sinks into insanity and believes he is visited by the 'Angel of America' and is given a mission to halt human progress which has driven God away from earth leaving only the angels. It is left to the viewer to decide whether the fantastical element is real or imagined but regardless each time the angel appears it adds to the understanding of the characters and raises important questions about the difficulties they are experiencing. Angels in America won four Golden Globes for its acting and this is a case where they were certainly all well deserved. Meryl Streep manages... Read review
