A long time ago sorceress and gaurdian to Castle Of Grayskull foretold that Prince Adam of Grayskull was fated to become alter ego HE-MAN ' the most powerful man in the universe'. Prince Adam lives with his parents/family in Castle of Grayskull.
According to the extras on this DVD Prince Adam was 18 years old when sorceress of Grayskull handed Adam a 'sword of power'. Only a few people, very close to Prince Adam would share the secret of Adams alter ego ,One of whom being the castles 'elf' wizard who is also Prince Adam's friend Orko .He is a smallish character, hence 'elf' who wears a red hooded cape and doesn't show his face ,just his eyes.
Together with those few select, Adam's alter Ego' He-Man' find themselves having to defend the castle of Grayskull and all of the land of Eternia(where they live) ,from the Evil which is Skeletor and his band of wickedness on a regular basis.
He-Man's main super power is his physical strength,he is so strong
he can even lift and throw castle Grayskull amoung other things, pretty impressive! Even though He-Man is super strong he prefers not to deal with baddies using violence and prefers to use a combination of his other many attributes which includes telephathic powers as one of them, to defeat his enimies and to put and end to any threats against eternia and the castle of Grayskull.
In order for He-man to change from Prince Adam he needs to use his sword of power. He has to hold the sword up above his head and shout ''By the power of Grayskull - I have the power!''
I remember those words being shouted around the playground a lot when I was in primary school! along with various variations on the theme tune eg. 'It takes him an hour to pick up a flower'' .
Anyway Prince Adam also discovers how his usually timid pet tiger Cringer can also be transformed at the same time that he uses the sword to transform himself, Cringer transforms into a brave armoured Battle Cat . (I remember playing with my brothers He-Man toys ,he had loads ! seeing as I was younger they eventually became mine and my younger sisters after they were his!).
Each episode is basically a new story . Always goodies versus baddies ,just how kids like cartoons, and the stories are not actually that bad-No worse if not better then the old old scooby doo's - I didn't like scooby doo that much so in my opinion it has to be better then that! You will also note at the end of each episode you are left with a morale of the tale or a piece of advice that is linked somehow to the episode you have just watched. Its kind of funny watching that bit ,but I guess it can't be bad for little kids who watch or watched it . I don't personally remember that much from watching the series as a kid as I was pretty young. It started in 1983 when I was 3 years old then, think I was more interested in the toys!
As soon as I started watching the DVD ,I was immediately drawn to the colours used in this cartoon ,they are so bright and vivid especially the purples, pinks and blues it all really stands out . The series has obviously dated but the script is quite funny and is sarcastic at times(well it is a comic based series so needs to be comical) ,It kind of makes fun of its self along the way , I think that shows in the expressions given to the faces of the characters and just the way they say things-it is just plain silly sometimes and thats what I like about it. I actually forgot how bad and funny He-Mans hair was and Prince Adam's out fit in the pink and purple with tight 'long john ' looking trousers with pants worn on the outside!!
It took me a while to re-adjust to its style after all these years since seeing it as a kid, especially when sometimes the way we remember things is completely different to how it actually was, But none the less I enjoyed it,It was a nice trip down memory lane and now I might actually remember it properly having seen it as an adult.
I think a DVD such as this would make an ideal fun stocking filler /gift for someone who was born around 1980,and I think some kids now might even get into it if they gave it a chance, it is a cool series.
