Has Anybody Seen My Gal? DVD

Advantages: Phenomenal performance from Ben Kingsley, great script and stylish
Disadvantages: Second half isn't as good as the first, gets a bit boring when Kingsley's not on screen

...Being a British gangster film and directed by a previous advert and music video director, Jonathan Glazer, and having the title it has, I wasn't expecting too much from Sexy Beast. However, I was pleasantly surprised. It tells the story of Gal, a retired gangster, played by Ray Winstone. He lives in a remote Spanish villa with his wife (Amanda Redman), and is enjoying his new start at life. However, one day, his idyllic lifestyle comes literally crashing down on him. He receives a phone call from London, informing him that Don Logan is coming to visit. And believe me; you don't want a visit from Don Logan. Basically, Logan is there to try to persuade Gal back to London for one final job, organised by Ian McShane's mob boss. Advantages: Superb performances, compelling first half

...What do you do on a bank holiday Sunday when the Queen mother has just died and all the shops are shut and the telly’s full of nothing but religion and fawning royalist tributes? You go down to the video shop and take out whatever is still left on the shelves to rent. For me today it was Sexy Beast, a British gangster movie starring Ray Winstone. I had mixed feelings before putting the film in the machine. I LOVE Ray Winstone, and I love gangster movies too, but there have been SO MANY of them over the past couple of years – none of which have managed to come close to Lock, Stock in my eyes – that I didn’t know if I could face another cliché ridden imitation. ...Armageddon, what can I say? It was the best movie I have ever seen, I have seen it at least 20 times if not more. The basic story line is about a comet coming towards earth, a team of oil diggers are sent to the comet to blow it up, but will or wont they make it? In between there is a romance between Liv Tyler and Ben Aflec so there is something for both the gals an the guys. The sound track is amazing, throughout. The graphics are spectacular, and u feel part of the movie…unfortunately I only got to see the film on my TV which is nearly 20 years old but on a big screen TV I would imagine that it is amazing. I would recommend anyone to watch this, anyone who likes a bit of romance, action and excitement. Defiantly something for a Friday nice in.... Read review
