This is a film choice of my hubby’s. He has mentioned this film so many times in the past and finally I was able to get hold of it on DVD for him, that was several months ago and I had managed not to have to watch it until last night! The film stars James Stewart and is a comedy which was made in 1950 so therefore it is in black and white. I am not particularly a fan of black and white films but I thought I would sit and watch it to make hubby shut up!

When Veta takes Elwood to the sanatorium they make a terrible mistake and Veta ends up getting locked up and Elwood is sent home! After a few minutes the doctors finally work out that they have locked up the wrong person and so they free Veta and set of in search of Elwood and Harvey.

I have to say that I was not expecting very much from this film but as it turned out I was quite surprised by it. The story was good and kept moving at a nice pace through out. I thought that James Stewart played the part of Elwood extremely well and he sort of had the constant look of being drunk. He added humour to his character and I thought he did a great job of working with an invisible co-star! The other characters were also very good and I liked the role of the sister Veta, she added a lot of humour to the film and I liked her skitty ways and how she would easily forget what she was supposed to be doing!
As I said before, I am not a fan of black and white films as I do think they are boring but after watching this one I have to say that after the first 5 minutes of the film I seemed to forget that there was no colour and was so into the film. The film did not lack anything by being in black and white.
The music in the film was nothing special and none of the songs really stood out to me., They all did fit in very well with the film and in the places they were used but I did not recognise any of the songs or tunes as the film was made in 1950 so it was a bit before my time!
The DVD which we have does have some bonus material which includes:-
Special introduction by Film Star Jimmy Stewart with photographic montage Theatrical trailer Production Notes on the Making of the Film Cast and Filmmakers Biographies and Film highlights
I have not watched any of these as I feel the film was not fantastic enough to warrant a watch of these. If hubby does ever watch them then I will ask him his opinion and update this for you.
The film has a running time of 1 hour and 40 minutes which I fell was quite long enough as it kept moving at a good pace and I was not loosing interest at any point, I am glad that they did not drag the story out for any longer. The film certificate is a U which means that this film is suitable for all and I do agree with this as there is no violence or string language in the film.
The Actress Josephine Hull won an Academy Award in 1950 for the Best Supporting Role for her character in this film.
This DVD is available from Amazon for just under £4 and I do recommend this for a great fun family film if you can see past the lack of colour.
Advantages: Pleasant fantasy. James Stewart. Disadvantages: Black and white quality
...problem is that his friend Harvey is an invisible 6’3 ¾” rabbit.
The film, Harvey, was made in 1950 not long after the end of the Second World War. It is an enjoyable bit of fantasy and make-believe. With all the potential horrors of real-life, the film is a delight of escapism. As Elwood himself puts it, "I wrestled with reality for thirty-five years, and I'm happy to say I won out over it.” The opening scene establishes Elwood’s carefree approach ... ...open for Harvey to come through of course, and is met by the postman who greets him with "It's a beautiful day.” "Every day's a beautiful day," replies Elwood before tearing the letter throwing the pieces to the wind. Elwood P. Dowd (James Stewart) is an affable charmer who enjoys a little drink now and again. He creates his own world aided and abetted by Harvey. Harvey, is not only a friend, he is a pooka, in old Celtic mythology a fairy spirit ...

Advantages: Very very witty, a perceptive comment on human nature. Disadvantages: None, unless you mind black and white
...his interaction with the invisible Harvey and the local postman we learn of his eccentric character.
The next scene fills out our knowledge of Elwood's character through conversation between Elwood's sister (Veta) and niece (Myrtle). This is absolutely brilliantly done, as the dialogue is completely natural. You're never left with the feeling that the dialogue is there only as 'this is the story so far'. The three major characters - Elwood, Veta ... ...just a little - whether Harvey really is imaginary after all.
It is a very funny film, and also has a couple of very poignant moments, so you will find yourself both laughing out loud and swallowing hard! It is also a fascinating insight into 1950s culture.
Some favourite moments:
Myrtle saying, "Mother, people get run over by trucks every day, why can't something like that happen to Uncle Elwood?!" ...

...based on a stage play, Harvey is an all time classic movie. James Stewart, playing Edward P.Dowd, is a kindly eccentric. from a comfotable background, who wishes well upon everyone. His only falicy it would seem is that his best friend is a 6 foot tall invisiable rabbit, anmed Harvey.

This is one of my favourite films, its funny, and very entertaining. Theres not a dull moment, in the whole movie, and even the kids enjoyed watching it, it was money well worth spending. You can also get pleasure out of watching it over and over again, and still see the funny sides to it. Very enjoyable, I must of seen this movie hundreds of times and I still enjoy watching it, the performances of the actors is remarkable, very well acted, and its ... ...days. My children had me buying the video, so they could watch it over and over again, which is good for the kids because there is no violence or sex in it, so its kid friendly and they arn't going to see anything they shouldn't, which with films these days you have to be careful on what they can watch. So to me these is a great family entertainment film. ...

Advantages: Very enjoyable fantasy. James Stewart. Disadvantages: Black and white film
This film is without a doubt one of the all time classic comedies. The very first time I saw this film I was totally hooked on it.
Stewart plays Elwood P. Dowd, a forty something year old man who just happens to have a six foot white rabbit as his best friend. They go everywhere together. To the bar, for walks. There is just one thing, only Elwood can see this white rabbit. It has his sister (Josephine Hull) is driven mad and they are so embarrassed ...

Harvey (Dustin Hoffman) has a job making jingles for TV ads. He travels from the US to the UK to take part in his estranged daughter's wedding, only to find he is ostracised and unwanted. When he loses his job over the phone, he's left pretty much all alone. Kate (Emma Thompson) is a single woman with a nagging mother who won't leave her alone. When the two meet, it just shouldn't work, but will it?
This is a stunning film. Fresh and different, it adds a whole new slant to the romantic comedy genre. What's so great about it is the way that the two main characters are so used to having crap lives, they expect that as the norm. When love rears its head, they expect nothing from it. The storyline, therefore, is interesting, varied, different and compelling.
The acting is just sublime. These two worked together on Stranger than ...

Elwood P. Dowd (Jimmy Stewart) is a good-natured, slightly sloshed man whose faithful companion Harvey is a 6-foot-3-inch rabbit that only he can see. When his sister Veta (Josephine Hull) tries to have him committed, she's taken in instead--and it's up to Elwood and Harvey to straighten out the mess. Based on Mary Chase's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, HARVEY's sweetness and humanity--as well as Stewart's trademark amiability--has made it one of the most beloved films of all time.
