In light of the recent film being released, companies are taking advantage of the fact that people are buying the earlier films. So, this box set doesn’t come as a surprise to me. I already have the five DVD’s I bought separately, so I can’t comment on the special features on this box set. However, I can tell you my opinions on the films.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone · Plot As the first film, a lot of people who had read the book were very excited, and I’m sure they weren’t disappointed because in my opinion, the PS is very true to the book. It starts with a boy called Harry Potter, who is mistreated by his Aunt and Uncle; during a trip to the zoo, we find there is something different about him. One day he receives a letter. This is very unusual, because Harry Potter has no friends; his cousin makes sure of that, and no family left because his parents died when he was a baby. The Dursley’s try to make sure Harry can’t read the letter and head to a shack in the middle of nowhere. Along comes Rubeus Hagrid who explains about Hogwarts, Diagon Alley and Magic. Once Harry arrives at Hogwarts, he finds
himself famous, for the death of his parents and because of the way in which he avioded death. At school Harry finds that dark forces are at work. Is Lord Voldermort, his parents murderer, and the Darkest Wizard ever, returning?
· Characters Harry Potter is the main character. His parents were murdered by a very dark wizard who tried to murder Harry too, but was unsuccessful. Harry was left with a scar and taken to live with his muggle Aunt and Uncle. Harry is described as a small skinny boy with untidy black hair and glasses. He is very selfless and can speak parseltongue (snake language). Harry makes an enemy of Draco Maloy when refusing to choose him over Ron.
Ron Weasley is one of Harry's best friends and is very good at wizards chess. Ron is a pure blood and has 3 brothers at Hogwarts. He stands by Harry no matter what and is happy to just sit back and let Harry take the limelight. He is sacastic and funny and very loyal. His and Harry's other best friend is Hermione Granger.
Hermione Granger is Harry's other best friend. She is loyal and very clever. At first she refuses to break rules and Ron and Harry reckon 'She needs to sort out her priorities' when she says she is going to bed before Harry and Ron come up with another 'clever plan to get us killed; or worse, expelled.' Hermione, Ron and Harry aren't all friends when they arrive at Hogwarts; it takes a troll to bring the three together. However, Hermione's intelligence is crucial to most of there schemes.
· Actors/Actresses Harry Potter is played by Daniel Radcliffe, nowadays we can't imagine another Harry in this day and age because Radcliffe has been Harry for so long. Radcliffe's acting is mediocre in places, fantastic in others and rubbish in the rest.I think the problem is, is that these are child actors with not much experience.
However Rupert Grint, who plays Ronald Weasley, is spot on in his performance, probably because, at this point he had starred in another film, Thunderpants, which gave him the experience to know what he was doing.
Emma Watson is a gem as Hermione Granger, her look is exactly as I had imagined her and her acting is near-spot on. She excellently, for a girl of her age, puts across Hermiones eagerness to learn and her bookish ways.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
· Plot Hogwarts has come under threat as people are being Petrified, and sentences written in blood are scrawled across the wall, claiming the heir of Slytherin has opened the Chamber of Secrets once more. As always Harry, Ron and Hermione are in the thick of it, trying to find out who the heir of Sytherin is and how to stop them. They also have a new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher after the death of Proffessor Quirrel. Proffessor Lockhart lightens up the film as the bumbling idiot tries to impress his students with knowledge he does'nt have. After Ron's sister Ginny is taken into the Chamber, the trio fear for her life and try to rescue her. And, well it would just spoil it or me to tell you what happens.
· Characters · Actors/Actresses Rubeus Hagrid is once again played by Robbie Coltrane and in my opinion an excellent choice. He is an experienced actor who knows what he is doing and is very convincing as our gigantic friend. He has good on-screen chemistry with the young hero.
For the last time lovable headmaster Albus Dumbledore is played by Richard Harris, who died days before the UK premiere of COS. A outstanding performance by and outstanding actor in one of his final performances.
Kenneth Branagh plays bumbling Proffesor Lockheart. His performance shows how he really is a great actor. In particular the scene with the cornish pixies, shows how fantastic he is by the change of direction the character is heading; being simpering and then trying to hide how out of control the situation is.
