* * * * * ABOUT THE FILM: I don't think the first Harry Potter film can be beated. The second and third films came close. But the sheer impack, magic and originality of 'The Philosopher's Stone' was completely new back then, and its appeal continues.
This film has a heart-warming quality, perhaps because Harry's story calls out to a lot of people. Harry is an ordinary boy, bullied by his uncle, aunt and cousin, an orphan who believes his parents died in a car crash. But weird things keep happening to him and Harry eventually finds out
he is a wizard, who at birth survived an attack by the darkest wizard of the age, who other magic-folk fear to name. Harry's struggle to become a wizard is like our struggle through life. He too must make friends, is by no means top of the class, must learn to stand up to new situations, and battle against new bullies. Worse of all is Draco Malfoy, jealous of Harry's world-wide fame, who tries to make his life hell.
Chris Columbus directs this film with great sensitivity, enthusiasm and faithfulness to the books. His closeness to the kids in the film is very obvious, although his daughter (playing red-haired Susan Bones) appears too many times to be coincidental.
The film sparkles with famous faces including Richard Harris, Dame Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman, Julie Walters and many others. The three leads were launched into stardom among these great actors... Dan Radcliff plays Harry with a youthful and charming innocence, Emma Watson plays a perfect no-it-all Hermione, while Rupert Grint's representation of Ron brims with character. All are given plenty of screentime, a real bonus for this film.
* * * * * ABOUT THE DVD: This DVD comes in a 2-disk set. A protective case with a montage of the film contains a fold-out box, the two disks safely guarded inside it. The whole display is midnight blue with great graphics, clearly labelled contents, and an atmosphere that captures the magic of this amazing film.
The disk containing the film itself has a full-coloured picture of Harry Potter that looks fantastic against the midnight blue scenes from the film. The Movie is split up into chapters that are clearly and imaginatively written in columns either side of the fold-out.
The BEST thing about this lovely set is the second disk, beautifully covered by full-colour images of Hermione and Ron. This disk truly captures everything special about the Harry Potter universe.

SEARCHING FOR YOUR OWN PHILOSOPHER'S STONE: Just as Harry must seek for the Philosopher's Stone one extra feature is a similar puzzle-solving adventure in order to get to a series of deleted scenes. These are great and some would have added even more brilliance to the film, but were sadly cut. This works great whether you play your DVD on a DVD player or a computer.
Getting to these scenes is fun for children, and even fun for adults as you have to search about for clues. You must go to Diagon Alley to buy a wand, get through potions class, get past Fluffy and the Mirror of Erised to get to them.
This can be a bit annoying for those who want to get to the extra scenes without this bother. But there are plenty of cheats and shortcuts available on the internet (and if anyone is stuck I think I could help get you unstuck).
My favourite deleted scene by far is the full-length version of Snape's Potion Class that had the best bits chopped out because of time restrictions on the film.
* * * * * MY THOUGHTS ON THIS COLLECTION: This is a great collection! The magic of Harry Potter goes on and on in all the extra features, interviews and behind the scenes info. The film was a magical experience, but this DVD takes you into the Harry Potter universe and you get to share the magic. I highly recommend this DVD. For those people who bought only the single-disk set, at the cheap price this is now selling at I would recommend you buy this as well! A truly great item.

Advantages: Fantastic sets, and some amazing special effects. Adheres broadly to the storyline of the book Disadvantages: Chunks of the story are missed out or details changed for no reason. Child actors are generally very poor!
Advantages: Not a lot really, No American Actors Disadvantages: Poor editing, no soundtrack to speak of, poor special effects, generally poor adaptation
Advantages: Offers freedom to watch all films so you can keep a continual track of the story. Disadvantages: Although enjoyable, the later films are more compelling to view than those before.
