Advantages: humorous, good suspense, enjoyable characters and story Disadvantages: reading it as an adult may feel different than how you felt reading it as a child
The first book of the HarryPotter series, I must confess, hooked me. The book is a combination of fantasy, mystery, and the boarding school stories like the Malory Towers series by Enid Blyton.
There is always something that makes each character stands out: Hermione's bushy hair, Ron's freckled face, Dumbledore's long and hooked nose, Snape's greasy hair, and of course - Harry's scar. These little things make the characters come alive for me. Of course Snape's hair is greasy, because there's something so innately unlikeable about him, but is he really as terrible as he looks? The book, like the best of detective fictions, is written in such a way that your suspicion about who the culprit is goes in so many directions.
And then, there are the spells, the centaurs, Professor Sprout's plants, the goblins of Gringotts, and Fluffy ...

Advantages: The writing is great, the imagination is fantastic, a very talented author Disadvantages: There are no disadvantages.
When I was bought this as a christmas present several years back, I initially thought it was purely a childs book but felt obliged to read it anyway. I was hooked - literally, unable to put it down! I was very surprised to find a story primarily aimed for children, could completely and utterly capture my imagination.
This is the first instalment of seven in the HarryPotter series and I would strongly recommend reading the books in succession.
The story is about a boy called Harry, growing up in the care of his not-so-nice aunt and uncle, because his parents were killed when he was just a year old. When Harry turns 11, he learns that he is actually a wizard and has been invited to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where he pals up with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Harry discovers that his parents who were ...

DVD Description
American director Chris Columbus (HOME ALONE) brings the magic of British author J.K. Rowling's beloved best-selling fantasy novel to life in HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER'S STONE. Eleven-year-old orphan Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) finds his world turned upside down when he discovers that, like his deceased parents, he is a wizard and has been accepted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. With fellow first-year students Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) and Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) by his side, Harry's adventures begin in the rambling castle that is Hogwarts. Vivid special effects make Hogwarts' magic a reality with paintings that come alive, staircases that move themselves, friendly ghosts, and fast-paced Quidditch (the school sport) matches in which students zoom around on their flying brooms. Mixed in with the miracles of Hogwarts are its dark hidden chambers and secrets, which Harry and his friends encounter as they embark on a quest to keep a treasured powerful object from falling into the wrong hands. Staying true to the book with this film adaptation, Columbus follows Rowling's story to the tiniest detail, making it a special treat for readers who were smitten with the novel. Radcliffe is especially engaging as Harry, infusing him with a believable sense of wonderment. The star-studded cast also includes Richard Harris, Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman, and Robbie Coltrane.
