or should I say chamber?
Well if you cast your mind back to when I wrote about the book, I was more impressed by this second in the series than the first and the same can be said of the film too.
I was a little disappointed by the first film not following the book very closely and so I was more aware that the chamber of secrets wouldn't either so when I watched it the firs time I just watched it as I would any old film that I really wanted to see.
I went to the cinema with my mum to see this going to the cinema in itself was a treat and we made a day of it with shopping as well which was lovely.
I was very excited about seeing the film and even though I knew the story and knew the ending I still clung to every word that was being said and it was like saying hello and good-bye to an old friend and I was sad to leave the cinema seat that I had sat in for two hours.
Its a very long film and if you haven't seen it or read the book (what are you waiting for?) I will explain the plot a little so if you want to watch it you can skip this part.
PLOT Harry Potter last year (in the first book) found out he was a wizard and went to Hogwarts school of witch craft and wizardry and now at the start of the film is on summer holidays and looking forward to leaving his Aunt and Uncles an returning to Hogwarts for the Autumn term. He is a little upset by the thought that none of his new friends have written to him but he still can't wait to leave.
One evening, whilst his Uncle and Aunt are entertaining an important business person, Harry gets a visitor by the name of Dobby the House Elf who
is trying to prevent Harry's return to Hogwarts for some reason that he cannot disclose but Harry has his heart set on returning to Hogwarts and will not take Dobby warnings seriously.
Uncle Vernon is very angry by what he thinks is Harry's disobedience and using magic as well that he puts up bars and says Harry will not be going to "that school again". Next you see a flying car with none other than Fred, George and Ron Weasly in it and they rescue Harry by pulling the bars off with the added bonus of making sure that Uncle Vernon ends up in the bushes below Harry's window.
The next thing that goes wrong is his travelling to Hogwarts as for some reason Harry and Ron can't get through the barrier at platform 9 ¾ and they miss the train. Ron then decides to fly his Dad's car there much to his parents dismay and the teachers too. When they arrive at Hogwarts they crash into the Whomping willow and get booted out of the car by the car itself which decides to run off into the forest to live on its own.
Next they learn who their new Defence against the dark arts teacher is and its none other than Gilderoy Lockhart a self obsessed Wizard who has written many books about his supposed exploits and is actually no good at all in teaching them how to fight against anything bad.
Harry is of course well known by all wizards and carrying on from the last film he is still disliked by Professor Snape, Draco Malfoy, and the rest of the Slytherins.
Then, strange things start to happen and some of the students, a cat and a ghost start getting petrified (frozen with terror), no-one knows what or who is doing it. Harry keeps hearing a voice but he tells no one at first this voice seems to be coming from inside the walls of the corridors and keeps moving around he hears it just before the petrified victims are found. The students are then told the story of the Chamber of Secrets by professor McGonagall. It is said that only Salazar Slytherin's descendent can open it. Harry Potter, they all find out, is a Parsel-tongue which means that he is able to speak and understand snakes so nearly everyone thinks that Harry is the one who has opened the Chamber of Secrets because that is what Salazar Slytherin was well known for. Harry then finds a diary which is enchanted and the story gets even more strange.
All that is left to say plot wise without spoiling it too much is that there are snakes and huge hairy spiders that get so big you might not want to watch when Harry and Ron go into the forest to try and find Hagrid's old friend.
The "Basilisk" near the end is quite frightening too, well it was for my children who are 4 ½ and 2 ½ but once I had reassured them they were OK with it. I must just add that my daughter, the younger of the two, is absolutely besottted with Dobby the house elf (special effects created) and kept on asking where Dobby was!
The film obviously moves quicker than the book and misses great chunks out but you don't notice this at first as it wasn't until the third time of watching that I had the book beside me to check out some things and they had changed the order of certain scenes and the some of the words that came out of one characters mouth might come out of another characters but this is all very minor in the overall plot.
The main facts were kept in and I think that Harry actually calls his owl by her name "Hedwig" this was one thing that annoyed me in the first film as it was so obviously forgotten.
The casting was excellent the main characters were all the same as the first film with Daniel Radcliffe playing Harry Potter, Emma Watson playing Hermione Granger and Rupert Grint playing Ron as well as the teachers and Hagrid all being played by the same actors. Of course the part of the new defence against the dark arts teachers Gilderoy Lockhart was given to Kenneth Brannagh and I can't think of a better person to cast as this slimy and totally over the top in love with himself character.
This film was directed by Chris Columbus and the screenplay was written by Steve Kloves and I think that these two did wonders to stick as close to the book as they did. I know that they can't follow the books exactly and I very glad that I enjoyed this film more than the first one like I did the books as this gives me hope that the third one, which just happens to be my favourite story of them all so far, will be great too.
The film is a PG and as such I would recommend that you watch it yourself first before showing it to very young children and you can be rest assured that my two children have not suffered any adverse nightmares or strange fears because of the film infact they were glued to the screen that I think they would recommend it to their friends. This is a certain must see for families and Harry Potter fans of all ages.
I do recommend this film to anyone and everyone but as a PG the very young should be watching with an adult but as I said I think it is a family film anyway. If you haven't seen the first film I suggest you watch that first but it wouldn't be the end of the world if you watched this one first.
I have the DVD and I hope to review that too because of the extras on it. On the case it says;
Bad language - infrequent, very mild Sex/nudity - none Violence - some mild Other - mild horror & fantasy spiders
I hope you can tell from this opinion how much I enjoyed the film and I urge you to watch it and if you haven't read the books read them they are fantastic.
I would recommend buying the DVD version because of the extras but if you haven't got a DVD buy the VHS you won't regret it. If I have missed anything out please let me know!
Thanks for reading
Amanda
