with his best friends Hermione and Ron. He ignores warnings not to go back to Hogwarts by a mysterious house elf named Dobby. Soon into the school year strange things start happening. Students are found in a petrified state, messages written in blood appear on the walls and Harry starts to hear voices in his head. It becomes apparent that someone has opened The Chamber of Secrets... but who is responsible and can the dark forces that lurk there be stopped?n
original left off. Harry is returning to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry after the summer holidays and, right from the start, things are not straightforward. Unable to board the Hogwarts express, Harry and his friends break all the rules and make their way to the school in a magical flying car. From this point on, incredible events happen to Harry and his friends--Harry hears evil voices and someone, or something is attacking the pupils. Can Harry get to the bottom of the mystery before it's too late? As with its predecessor Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is a highly readable and imaginative adventure story with real, fallible, characters, plenty of humour and, of course, loads of magic and spells. There is no need to have read Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone to enjoy this book. However, if you have read it, this is the book you have been waiting for. Christopher Columbus notes, "You'll hear the familiar themes that all of us have grown to love and associate with Harry Potter. You'll also hear a wealth of new material... Like the Potter novels, John Williams's new score is not a sequel." There is indeed a rich diversity, with a pompous march for "Gilderoy Lockhart", hugely colourful pyrotechnics for "Cornish Pixies" and a beguiling new theme for "Dobby the House Elf". The all-action "The Spiders" evokes the maelstrom of Williams' glorious action writing for The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and the London Symphony Orchestra and London Voices play with all the required whirlwind magic. Williams breaks tradition by not conducting, handing the baton to William Ross, who provides additional new music. Because Williams had simultaneously to score Steven Spielberg's Catch Me If You Can (2002) Ross has also rearranged themes from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001). Fans need have no fear, as the result sounds like pure Williams, an even more spirited fantasy adventure than before. This is a blockbusting, thrilling crowd-pleaser to stand beside the Star Wars soundtracks with its head held high.--Gary S Dalkin

Advantages: better than the first film and enjoyable Disadvantages: it could have been much better
...up to the release of Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix DVD next month I have decided to review the previous films in the series. So this is number two in my series of reviews - Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets (2002).
As I sat waiting for the second instalment of the Harry Potter film franchise to start, I kept thinking "Please be better than the first film" (I have a feeling my husband was thinking this too!). Yes I had enjoyed the ... ...In this film we see Harry and his friends return to Hogwarts for their second year where another plot is brewing to bring the evil lord Voldemort back to his former power. But this plot not only endangers Harry but all the pupils at Hogwarts. However on this occasion my apprehension was slightly less justified as I shall explain.
From the very opening of the film you know this film is going down a darker path. The familiar orchestrated theme returns ...

Advantages: Excellent selection of extras compliment the film Disadvantages: A lot is too old for the younger HP fan
...to see the most recent Harry Potter film at the cinema, we thought we would refresh our minds in terms of the second film as it seemed so long since we had seen it. 'Chamber Of Secrets' is the second film in the Harry Potter series and it is based on the book of the same name, although as with most films it is not an exact replica of the story in the book as time constraints mean that this is not possible. I will say straight off that if you want ... ...he was born to play Harry Potter, as he closely resembles the mental image JK Rowling conjured up in her books. Emma Watson is excellent as the fiesty Hermione Grainger, and completing the trio is Rupert Grint as Harry's best friend Ron Weasley. They are joined by Richard Harris (Dumbledore), Alan Rickman (Prof Snape) and Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid), although there are some new cast members this time round, and the most entertaining has to be Kenneth ...

Uncle Vernon is very angry by what he thinks is Harry's disobedience and using magic as well that he puts up bars and says Harry will not be going to "that school again". Advantages: gripping, more new characters, still as captivating Disadvantages: very long!
...informed me that the new Harry Potter film, "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets", was finally out at the cinema. A phone call from my dad while I was at uni told me that I was to take my sister and two youngest brothers to see it when I returned, but sadly I couldn't wait, and traipsed down to the cinema in Cambridge with my friends a few days after it opened.
When seeing it for the second time, this time with a 7 year old, an 11 year old and ... ...faces, but new enemies for Harry and his friends to conquer. This film is not for arachnophobes: frequently throughout the film we are treated to glimpses of spiders scuttling out of the building, and there is one scene with giant spiders, which terrified some of the smaller children in the cinema. Not my little sister though - she's tougher than that!
Dislike of snakes is another reason to stay away, especially with the size of the snake (well, ...

...a house elf called Dobi, Harry Potter returns to Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry to study year 2 of 'how to be a wizard'. The school resonates to the usual comings and goings, new pupils and staff, and all the usual events that typify your average wizards school. While the first film may have left many unimpressed, to others it was a magical adventure that managed to faithfully stick to JK Rowling's original novel. Can a second bite of the cherry ever manage to match up to the first? Apologies in advance but I'll be making comparisons between the two and no doubt be leaving ...

DVD Description
Director Chris Columbus recreates the magic of the second book from author J.K. Rowling's best-selling series about a young wizard, Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe). In this sequel, Harry and his friends Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) and Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) return to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for the new school year only to be met with a terrifying mystery. An unknown creature, one that supposedly lives in the legendary Chamber of Secrets hidden at Hogwarts, is attacking students in the school, leaving them literally petrified and as cold as stone. Even the professors seem at a loss for how to solve the chilling mystery, leaving it up to Harry and his friends to save the day. Rowling's story translates well to the big screen, with a magical flying car, a giant spider, a house elf named Dobby, and assorted other creatures making their film debuts. Radcliffe continues to charm as the wide-eyed young Potter, and Grint shines as his best friend and sidekick. Kenneth Branagh joins the all-star cast as the preening megalomaniac author and professor, Gilderoy Lockhart. HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS also stars the late Richard Harris, majestic Maggie Smith, and an under-used Alan Rickman.
