million copies and was awarded the New York Times Outstanding Book Award. Sixth-grader Harriet attends school on the New York's Upper East Side along with her two best pals Sport the jock and Janie the mad scientist. After school every day she takes her notebook and proceeds through her spy route. Climbing on milk crates and hoisting herself up dumbwaiters Harriet observes the rich lady who never gets out of bed; the man with twenty-five cats and the Italian family who runs a grocery store. She writes brutally warts-and-all notes on them all. Harriet's downfall is that she also writes down her thoughts about people she actually knows. After a game in the park when her notebook is knocked out of her hands and read by her classmates Harriet's deepest thoughts are revealed and she is quickly ostracised by all her classmates - even the boy with the Purple Socks - who form the Spycatcher's Club to punish her. After her parents find out what's happened Harriet receives a final crushing blow. She is no longer allowed to take notes -- her parents her teacher and even the cook search her every day for a contraband notebook. Harriet's only consolation is the love and the wise advice of her nanny who manages to get her through this difficult period in her life. A classic in the US where it was first published and a major motion film from Paramount Harriet the Spy is a beloved book throughout the world.

book: its unflinchingly honest portrayal of childhood problems and emotions changed children's literature forever. Happily, neither Fitzhugh's style has dated nor her themes become obsolete, and it is still recognized as one of the finest children's novels around. The fascinating story centres around an intensely curious and intelligent girl, Harriet, who literally spies on people and writes about them in her secret notebook, trying to make sense of life's absurdities. When her classmates find her notebook and read her painfully blunt comments about them, Harriet finds herself a lonely outcast. Fitzhugh's writing is astonishingly vivid, real and engaging, and Harriet, by no means a typical, lovable heroine, is one of literature's most unforgettable characters. (Ages 8 to 12)

I noticed that a couple of the ?What I like to read? bits referenced this book, so I was amazed that no one had written a review.
Set among the privileged wealth of New York?s private schools and private nannies, Harriet the Spy presents one of the most remarkable characters in children?s literature made even more remarkable by the context in which the book was first published.
The book opens with Harriet M. Welsch teaching her friend Sport how to play ?Town?. Harriet doesn?t actually have a middle name. She added the ?M? herself because it sounds more grown up. ?Town? is a game where you make up all the places in a town and then decide all the people who live there and what they do and who they know and what they think. From the start you know that Harriet has tried to teach this game to Sport before. You know that Sport puts up ...
Advantages: Really good story, Inventive, Great for the whole family Disadvantages: This type of film has been done before
a real treat for the whole family. It is a film where you can get the popcorn out and sit in front of the television together to watch this. It is the perfect film for rainy days like today. There is a lot of action, but without all the violence and gore. The director has aimed this film at kids with a sense of fun and playfulness.
Fegan Floop is played by (Alan Cumming) and Minion (Tony Shalhoub). Spy Kids was a huge success much more so than was ever anticipated. Due to the huge success of this film an extended version was made that includes special effects not shown in the original film. Special effect sequences were shown on this that were not previously affordable in the previous budget. These are shown on the DVD.
This is definitely a film worth watching for its entertainment factor. It is bright and colourful throughout and gadget ...

DVD Description
Eleven-year-old Harriet's (Michelle Trachtenberg) obsession for observation is well-chronicled in her most treasured possession: a notebook marked "Private," in which she collects her frequently unflattering--though accurate--thoughts about those around her. When her classmates discover her penchant for "spying," however, they're anything but amused. Adapted from the 1964 book by Louise Fitzhugh.
