This comedy film has had some pretty mixed reviews, mainly leaning more towards the negative than the positive. Having the sort of arrested-development juvenile sense of humour that I have, I enjoyed this wacky, outrageous and politically-incorrect extravaganza. I agree that it's not Oscar-winning material nor of Shakespearean writing or acting calibre. I also agree that it's not as good as the first one, 'Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle', which has become somewhat of a cult film. But I spent most of this one's run time in hysterics, so it was really pretty good in my own opinion (and my Significant Other is very pernickity about films and is not as silly as I am, but he liked it too).
The two films in the 'Harold and Kumar' series follow the adventures of two best pals who are sort of a cross between 'Bill & Ted' and 'Cheech & Chong', and find themselves in a non-stop series of improbable, ultra-nutty, off-the-wall and often surreal scenarios with some of the most bizarre people. One of the most notable of these bizarre characters is Neil Patrick Harris (who played 'Doogie Howser' in the TV series of that name), who appears in both films playing 'himself' in a breathtakingly OTT performance as a totally deranged sex-and-drug-crazed lunatic. Harold and Kumar themselves are very funny, coming across naturally and believably as a somewhat uptight nerd (Harold) and a happy-go-lucky stoner who is always getting both of them into trouble (Kumar), and both of whom are a few sandwiches short of a picnic.
The new film picks up where the first one left off, where Harold seemed maybe just about to finally have some success with the lovely Maria, with whom he was smitten in the first film. We start by seeing Harold in the shower recalling happy memories of his few treasured moments with Maria, to the accompaniment of Louis Armstrong's 'Wonderful World'. Awwww.
But we are then unpleasantly brought down to earth with a bump by squelchy fart noises. Harold looks out of the shower curtain, to see Kumar sitting on the toilet right next to him. 'What are you DOING??' Harold cries. 'I'm taking the most incredible dump of all time, man,' Kumar replies ecstatically, explaining that it's as a result of the dozens of burgers they had eaten at White Castle. This pretty well sets the tone of the film. Harold expresses his disgust, and then Kumar reminds him 'We gotta leave for the airport in an hour!' It transpires that they are off to Amsterdam, to which Maria had to depart at the end of the last film, to try to catch up with her (or, stalk her, more precisely).
We next join Harold and Kumar hanging out together in the men's toilet on the plane (don't ask?), Kumar proudly displaying to Harold a new gadget he's just invented : 'Roldy, I want to introduce you to a new invention of mine - meet The Smokeless Bong!' Kumar begins to demonstrate it and Harold, not at all happy with the idea of using this device on the plane, demands that he put it away, and Harold goes back to his seat in a huff. However, Harold neglects to close the toilet door after him, and an old lady sees Kumar lighting the bong. 'Terrorists!' she shrieks in horror, mistaking the bong for a bomb.
The passengers panic, and Kumar tries to calm them: 'Oh, this is just a bong!' he laughs. Unfortunately, he is misheard, and everyone thinks he said 'bomb'. Pandemonium ensues, and our lads get tackled and arrested. Agent Ron Fox is brought on to the case and proves to be the most gob-smackingly offensive, racist and ignorant government official one can even begin to imagine, and thanks to him, Harold & Kumar end up incarcerated at Guantanamo Bay. They are imprisoned in a cell next door to a couple of real terrorists, who stage a prison break which enables our boys to escape. It now falls to Harold and Kumar to make their way back to America and try to clear their names.
But of course, this endeavour is fraught with frustrating obstacles and near misses involving one encounter with weird people or dodgy situations after another, giving us plenty of zany comedy and silliness. With Agent Fox hot on their trail and with our boys not knowing who they can trust and who they can't, their inept attempts to get out of the mess they've got into are a category of near-misses and freak-outs.
Definitely not for those who are easily offended, don't like rude language or are seriously politically correct, because this film and its predecessor are jam-packed with non-stop rude and crude humour. But if this is your type of humour, you will probably enjoy it for what it is.
I do recommend this as a fun madcap comedy where you can just pack up your brains for an hour and a half, have a good cheap laugh at the schoolyard humour and enjoy the crazy surrealness of it all. If you like this and haven't seen the first film, be sure to see it as it is more of the same but better.

...and Abbott and Costello comes Harold and Kumar. Unlike the aforementioned cerebrally challenged cohorts, these two are even more dangerous because of their penchant for smoking pot. Advantages: Sorry none for me! Disadvantages: Poor story line, poor humour and it has all been done before.
Harold and Kumar escape from Guantanamo Bay was certainly not my choice of Sunday night viewing but as it was Ciao`s product of the week and I am trying to raise as much money as possible for charity I gave it a go in order to be able to review it.
Ridiculous, outrageous, stupid, politically incorrect but still funny in places would probably be my initial way to describe this movie. The script and the actions of the two is probably best suited to ... ...THE STORY Harold and Kumar escape from Guantanamo Bay is actually a follow on from the first movie in the series which I have to admit I have not seen. Having read a bit about the first on IMDB, it appears that this one picks up exactly where the last left off. Harold, played by John Cho has become besotted, perhaps even obsessed with his girlfriend Maria, played by Paula Garces. Maria has jetted off to Amsterdam on a modelling job and Harold is ...

Advantages: Neil Patrick Harris plays his part with gusto. Disadvantages: Thoroughly awful direction, writing and sleepwalking performances.
Stoners Harold and Kumar are on their way to Amsterdam so Harold can profess his love to the girl of his dreams. But a mix-up leads to them being mistaken for terrorists and being thrown into Guantanamo Bay. So they have to break out, clear their names and stop Kumar's ex-girlfriend's wedding in the process. Now if only they didn't have to deal with hillbillies, the Ku Klux Klan and the leader of the free world in the process…
Okay, so the end of ... ...as the first movie established Harold as an uptight office drone and Kumar as a terminally stoned slacker, they seem to think their work is done in that area. There's no attempt to re-introduce the leads, so if you haven't seen the first film, you'll have no idea what's going on. New nemesis Ron Fox is a tightly wound ball of misplaced racial prejudices. But there isn't enough behind the skewed beliefs to consider a personality, so there's no way ...

In Harold and Kumar's first outing, (Harold and Kumar Get the Munchies), we witnessed the hapless duo - as the title suggests - get the munchies after smoking a large quantity of weed. Review
[T]he HAROLD & KUMAR movies, of which this is the second...go further than most stoner raunch comedies in acknowledging certain realities of contemporary American life... (New York Times, 17/06/2008)
[A] film that is even more raunchy and raucous than its predecessor....This long strange trip of a sequel also is surprisingly subversive and politically charged (USA Today, 17/06/2008)
DVD Description
America's favourite pothead pals, Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn), return with an uproariously un-PC sequel that skewers everything from racial prejudice to the president of the United States. HAROLD AND KUMAR ESCAPE FROM GUANTANAMO BAY picks up shortly after the first film, cult favourite HAROLD AND KUMAR GET THE MUNCHIES, as the boys plan an impromptu trip to the Mecca of Marijuana: Amsterdam. There, Harold will unite with the love of his life and Kumar will achieve cannabis bliss. The two soon find themselves in hot water when Kumar sneaks a bong onto the flight and is mistaken for a bomb-wielding terrorist. Indeed, after a run-in with racist Homeland Security agent Ron Fox (Rob Corddry of THE DAILY SHOW), the two land in the hottest water of all: Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. After escaping from prison and fleeing back to the U.S., the two set out across country to get help from Harold's politically connected former classmate, who is also marrying the girl that Kumar let get away. Along this oddball odyssey they will encounter incestuous rednecks, the KKK, gun-toting prostitutes, and a drugged-out Neil Patrick Harris (HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER). But when the ex-classmate turns the two over to the authorities, Harold and Kumar must use their wits--plus a dash of luck and a dose of humility--to earn their freedom, win back their respective loves, and save their friendship. Original writers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg return for both screenwriting and directing credits, ensuring that the budding franchise retains the same subversive sensibility while upping the audacity of its satire. Frequently raunchy but revelling in the bonds of acceptance and friendship, HAROLD AND KUMAR ESCAPE FROM GUANTANAMO BAY is a madcap romp that delivers plenty of humorous highs.
