Happy Gilmore is a comedy made in 1996 and is co-written and stars the, then, relatively unknown Adam Sandler.
Sandler plays the titular Happy Gilmore, a man who loves his ice hockey and would love to play for a team, but there's just one problem: he can't skate. He's tried out again and again to no avail. Meanwhile, his grandmother, who raised him, has been put in a retirement home because she can't pay her taxes and so her home is foreclosed, so Happy has to make some money fast!
While at a driving range, the resident pro, Chubbs (Carl Weathers) sees Happy's secret weapon: he can hit a golf ball harder and faster than anyone else. He wants Happy to become a pro, which he isn't happy about, but does it so he can make money for his grandma. Soon he has become the talk to the town and people flock to see him play, to the resentment of Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald), the current champion.
If you've seen an Adam Sandler film before, you basically know what you're gonna get with this one. He is great as Happy, a foul-mouthed short-tempered childish man who, despite all his faults, has a heart of gold and ends up being a pretty likeable character. Shooter is a great adversary, and the conflict between these two make for some of the best moments of the film, I'm sure I don't need to tell people of the 'eat for breakfast' part.
The plot is hardly original, but it's a fun ride along the way. Yes, there are stupid, random characters inserted anywhere they possibly can, but I think this adds to the charm of this movie. It's a wacky comedy, and the rather surreal moments seem to fit in well with the films overall tone.
One particularly hilarious bit for me was the fight between Happy and Bob Barker on a celebrity golf tournament. Seeing Sandler fighting one of America's most beloved TV personalities is fantastic, with him saying one of the best lines of the entire movie ("The price is wrong, bitch") before Bob lays him out.
I would recommend this movie to any Adam Sandler fans, or anyone who wants to see a well crafted comedy they don't have to think too much about. Four stars!

Advantages: Fun for all ages, a great bit of light-hearted relief. Disadvantages: No major ones at all, but why couldn't they make the film longer, or at least a sequel
