Well, who has not heard of Adam Sandler? Mmmm, I thought so, almost everyone seems to know who he is nowadays! From his performances in Coneheads back in 1993, right up to his latest offering, You Don't Mess With The Zohan, this man has gone from strength to strength and seems to get funnier with age. And so myself and hubby were sitting earlier tonight and bored because there was nothing decent to watch on the television. So hubby starts flicking through the channels and Happy Gilmore was just about to start on one of the Sky Movie channels. So we decided that we needed a good laugh and settled down on the sofa to watch Sandler's genius at work. You can get this on Amazon UK for as little as £2.98 brand new. As always, my advice would be to shop around. If you don't mind buying a second hand copy, I'm sure Ebay would have some really cheap bargains to be had as well!
***Synopsis*** Happy Gilmore (Sandler) wants to be a pro ice hockey player. He wants this so much and it seems to be all he thinks about. His only problem is his temper. His name may be happy but he is far from that.
He has a serious anger management problem. He holds a strange ice hockey record - he is the only player who has attempted to stab another player with his skate!
He fails to be selected at yet another tryout and returns home to find his girlfriend is leaving him. The next morning, he gets a call from his beloved Grandma (Frances Bay) and races to her house to see what is wrong. Well, she has not paid her taxes in quite a while and the taxman is repossessing all her furniture and her house. She is forced into a nursing home, run by a dictatorial orderly (Ben Stiller, although uncredited). Happy vows that somehow he will get the money together to get the house back for his Grandma. While at Grandma's house, he discovers that he has the ability to drive a golfball a fair distance and thinks that this could be the way to get some money together to help Grandma. He goes to the local driving range and charges people who challenge him to send a golf ball 400 yards. Here he is spotted by Chubbs (Carl Weathers) who is a former pro golfer who offers to coach him.
Happy plays and wins the local tournament and wins the opportunity to play in a pro tournament and decides that this is the way he will get the money together to pay Grandma's debts and get the house back for her. His main opponent is Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald) who is the favourite to win the competition and the gold jacket that is awarded to the winner every year. Shooter is an arrogant so-and-so who is convinced that he is going to win. He treats Happy like the amateur he really is and despises the popularity that Happy gets. The crowds love Happy and support him, while Shooter's popularity seems to wane as the competition continues.
And so ensues the competition between Shooter and Happy to see who will win the competition, the popularity, the golden jacket and the heart of the girl, Virginia (Julie Bowen). ***My Opinion***
There is only one word that I have to use for this film. Hilarious! I absolutely loved this film and have watched it several times on the television now. Sandler's performance is superb. His comic timing is absolutely spot on and I personally cannot fault him at all. McDonald provides a super straight man to Sandler's comic genius. Other superb performances comes from Weathers as the one-handed Chubbs and Bowen as the PR girl who falls for Gilmore in a big way. Although uncredited in the film, Stiller also provides a very good performance as the dictatorial orderly who runs the nursing home with the precision of an army camp, while terrorising the inhabitants to their breaking points.
I laughed and laughed and laughed and thought I was going to split my ribs in places. I have to say that my hubby is a bit stoical when it comes to comedies, and will only laugh if he finds the film hilarious. And during this film he was laughing away, and almost shrieking with laughter at points. I cannot really comment on the soundtrack as I don't really pay much attention in films to the music - I leave that to the experts on this subject! My attention is taken up with the actual film and performances.
But this is a Sandler classic in my opinon, up there with the Waterboy and Little Nicky. Yes, when a Sandler film comes out, you can guarantee that me and hubby will have it on the list of films that we are going to watch. ***Final Word***
I'm not even going to ask the question. I think you all know the answer by now. I wholeheartedly recommend this to each and every one of you!!! It is a feel-good movie that is guaranteed to lift your spirits after a bad day. If you want to have a good laugh after a hard day then this is a film to watch. It certainly lifts my spirits after I have watched it.
Thanks for reading and tee off with care! Di x
