Happy Gilmore, one of Adam Sandler’s earlier releases, is slightly toned down when compared to some of his other films, such as ‘Billy Madison’ or ‘The Water Boy’. For most people this will be a sigh of relief, and for good reason. This side of Sandler is definitely my favourite. Happy Gilmore is full of cocky remarks and brilliant one-liners that could only be pulled off by the man himself.
Happy is a frustrated twenty-something who has grown up under the care of his grandmother, after his mother left and his father died in a tragic accident! Happy has wanted to be a hockey player his whole life, the only problem is; he’s not any good!
In an attempt to raise money for his grandma’s repossessed house, the wannabe hockey player is talked into entering a golf tournament by Chubs. (Carl Weathers) Chubs is desperate to make him the top class golfer he could have been if only his hand hadn’t been bitten off by an alligator.
Happy’s short fuse results in high TV ratings and a new youthful crowd of golf fans. The authorities are putting up with his bad behaviour until one of his competitors, Shooter McGavern (Christopher McDonald), decides to stir up some trouble. He’s clearly not impressed by Happy’s quick merge into the golf scene, and sees him as a major threat, so is desperate to get him kicked off the tour. A highly amusing fight with Bob Barker gets Happy into some trouble, (The price is wrong, b**ch!) but things really get awkward when he has to play head to head with Shooter. The game becomes personal and they end up playing for more than the exclusive ‘gold jacket’. The two golfers cause a lot of friction on the golf course while Happy’s grandma is stuck in a nursing home, slave driven by Hal (Ben Stiller). When things get desperate, Happy has to rely on his ‘Happy Place’ to get him through the tournament.
Being a huge Sandler fan, I’ve seen all his films to date, and this is still my favourite! Its got to be the cocky and stupid remarks (you eat pieces of s**t for breakfast?) that make it the funniest of the lot, and a brilliant performance from Ben Stiller makes it doubly great! From the moment the film begins right to the moment it ends I cant help but to laugh, no matter how many times I’ve seen it before! No point going to rent it… get down the shops and get your own copy!!

Advantages: Fun for all ages, a great bit of light-hearted relief. Disadvantages: No major ones at all, but why couldn't they make the film longer, or at least a sequel
