Golf does not really strike you as one of the ‘funniest’ sports in the world, yet over the years it has been a rich source of inspiration spawning numerous great movies such as Caddyshack and the unintentionally humorous Tin Cup(it was so bad) and most recently Happy Gilmore. Starring Hollywood’s flavour of the month, Adam Sandler as the eponymous hero, ‘Happy Gilmore’ is a worthy addition to the ‘genre’, being both funny whilst maintaining a sense of ‘family’ fun about it rather than decending into toilet humour for some cheap laughs(well not too often anyway). OK, so its not the most intelligent film around, but it certainly worth watching if you can stomach Sandler as a performer, and its a great family movie.
We are introduced to Happy Gilmore as a wannabe hockey player with few claims to fame other than holding the record for being sin binned the most number of times and infamy as the only high school hockey player to try to stab another player with an ice-skate. Orphaned as a child he lived with his grand-mother and when he finds out that her house its to be repossed for non-payment of taxes ($250,000 worth) he vows to find the money to reclaim it before the auction date. It looks like an improbable feat until by a chance bet with a couple of removal guys who are taking his gran’s furniture away shows that he has an absolutely enormous golf swing - driving over 400 yards. This leads him onto the pro-tour and well on the way to winning enough in prize money to reclaim his gran’s house well before the auction deadline. However, his temper and an on-running feud with ‘Shooter’ McCloud, threaten his chances of success...
So, is it any good? Well, if you like Adam Sandler then you are likely to like any movie that he appears in because neither his performance or the humour changes very much from one movie to the next(Little Nicky being the exception). Here once more, he plays a ‘typical’ American guy with a few screws loose in his usual slightly over-the-top but understated way which you’ll either love or hate depending on your personal tastes. Kids love him however, and this is a perfect movie for the whole family to sit down and watch, although for some reason it is rated with a 12 certficate, perhaps because of the ‘violence’ and the mild but noticeable use of expletives. This is I suppose the typical American comedy movie, but without resorting to bodily functions and ‘F-words’ for a cheap giggle for a change, relying instead on slapstick and visual gags alone. If you are looking for some intelligent humour and witty reparte, then this is going to spoil your evening, otherwise, its well worth checking out to waste a couple of hours on a Friday evening or to keep the kids quiet for a while...or both.

Great opinion on a great film. I've owned this for a while and have watched it again and again. It's just one of those films that will never get boring or repetative! Alan (aljones)

Advantages: Fun for all ages, a great bit of light-hearted relief. Disadvantages: No major ones at all, but why couldn't they make the film longer, or at least a sequel
