Basically the plot startes in WW2- When young Hannibal Lecter sees his parents taken out by Germans and his little sister literally devoured by Russian Soldiers. Fast forward years later craves and wor Hannibal is out for revenge and eventually finds out that it’s a dish better served cold with Fava beans and a nice Chianti. ha
For me though i was left quite disappointed as the movie failed to allow the familiarisation from this prequel to the Hannibal we all know and love in the Silence of the lambs.
To coin an old phrase "mutton dressed as lamb" well this film for me certainly was mutton dressed as lamb but take away the francise of Hannibal Lectar and you are left with nothin but mutton!
Saying though I was never bored watching the movie, so it is watchable. I just thought it could have been better.
Gaspard Ulliel (Hannibal) didn’t look a lick like Anthony Hopkins but worked for me in his own right. He had an interesting look, was intense, had magnetism and an unusual accent that made him more “compelling” to watch. Rhys Ifans (Vladis) made for a great villain, Li Gong (Lady Shikibu) did what she had to do well; I just wish there was more to the part.
One thing i did like about the movie is the fact that, Young Hannibal sure knew how to kick some butt!!!........! Beheadings, stabbings, choking, a knife stabbed under one’s chin… the boy's a complete mentalist.................. I’d hang out with him..ha.
The best way to enjoy Hannibal Rising if you ask me is to forget that it's part of the Lecter franchise and avoid comparing it to the other films. They’re totally different "Hannibals"!

I see you've posted this as a DVD review, but you've not mentioned the DVD. Are there any extras? If so, what are they and are they any good? If you add to this, or if you change it to be posted as a "Film Only" review, which can be done by accessing "edit review" above the review and changing the drop down menu under the "Which format are you reviewing?" question at the bottom, please let me know and I'll re-rate.

I watched this film last night and didn't really enjoy it despite not having seen any other Hannibal Lecter films. Good review. Jules x
