First off let me start by saying, if you want to know the story of this film from beginning to end, then you had better read some others, because that’s not what I do. As people who read my film opinions will already know, I never tell the story of a movie, I only give a few plot outlines and then tell the reader if I thought it was good or not.
So was it good or not? The answer to that question is very short, but I’m going to spin it out a bit, (otherwise it wouldn’t be much of an op would it?)
As fans of Hannibal the Cannibal will know this is the third in the trilogy, but only the second to star the man himself, (He’s Welsh you know! Born just down the road from where I live.. That’s enough get on with it) anyway, Hannibal kicks off with Dr Lecter now living in Florence (Italy) wanting to be the curator of a museum. As it turns out someone is trying to get him, and make Starling look bad in the process, and it’s not the FBI, so some rather gruesome things happen to a few people and Hannibal goes back to the ‘good ole U S of A’ where of course a certain Clarice M. Starling, takes up the chase. That IS the basic premise of the movie, and that’s all you’re getting on the plot front. Ridley Scott shows you all far better than I could tell it!
Now on with other stuff, I was well disappointed when I found out that Jodie Foster wasn’t going to be playing agent Starling, and when the movie started and people were talking to Starling, in my mind I was saying that’s not her, this woman’s an impostor! But let me tell you that went away very quickly, I’ve got to give full credit to Julianne Moore she played the part of Clarice very, very well. As you would expect Anthony Hopkins was once again chillingly real as Lecter, it’s almost as though the part were created just for him. There was good support from Ray Liotta who plays Deputy Assistant Inspector General, Paul Krendler. (The git) and also from Garry Oldman who plays the part of Mason R. Verger (I guarantee you will not recognise him!)
I had heard that the ending was a bit sick, and that it was gore, for gore’s sake, well I didn’t think it was, okay it was a bit ‘minging’ but there was nothing there that I hadn’t seen before. And talking of the end, this movie for me had a very satisfactory ending. Ridley Scott, once again proves, beyond any doubt, that he can make films. (By the way did you know he directed a series of, wait for it, Z Cars, yes that’s right I did say Z Cars, way back in 1962, I just thought I’d impart that bit of useless information to you all.) And for the uninitiated he also directed Gladiator and BladeRunner.
So was it as good as the Silence of the Lambs? Not quite, it didn’t quite recapture the chemistry, that Foster and Hopkins shared, although to be fair there weren’t as many intense face to face meetings in this one, and also we now all about Hannibal Lecter. That was something else I wanted to mention, in Silence of the Lambs, you have to guess what sort of a monster Lecter is, but in Hannibal, he shows us all too well.
Extra info – Cert 18 (Well deserved) it runs about two hours which passes very quickly, there is no sex/nudity, the violence is strong and graphic and enough of it and there is no bad language that I remember.
So was it good or not, you bet it was good! Very watchable and very enjoyable.Hannibal – A very good, intense thriller, well worth the rental money.

Nice op; having read the book, I'm not sure I've got the stomach for the film - sounds pretty revolting. BTW, if the film's not as good as Silence of the Lambs, the book most certainly is; I highly recommend it. Cheers, JB

I enjoyed this film, but couldn't understand how the critics said it was gory! It was too far fetched to be realistic in places, Susan
