I will be honest with youand say that I went in to seeing thi movie thinking that it wouldn't be very good. No Jodie Foster, mixed reviews and far too much hype, didn't really sound like it would come close to the brilliance of The Silence Of The Lambs. Well I was wrong.
This is a superb movie!
Ridley Scott has managed to do what many thought he wouldn't be able to do in creating a movie which, lathough not surpassing The Silence Of The Lambs, does come close to matching it brilliance...just not quite. Hannibal is at large on the streets following on from his escape in the 2nd of the trilogy. Not exactly lying low though, this criminal mastermind carries on his depraved behaviour whilst evading the FBI and world police agencies with consumate ease. He s however also being stalked by a hideously disfigured multimillionaire madman, who had arun in with Lecter many years earlier - hence the disfigurement. Clarice is back on the case again as Lecter resurfaces in Italy and all hell begins to break loose...
This movie has some truly nightmarish visuals and stomach churning gore. Gut wrenching scenes like you wouldn't believe can be seen here, all bizarrely plausible even in their implausibility. A deep psychological foreboding hangs heavy throughout the movie because you never know to what depths the depravity is going to sink to next and Lecter always looks on the verge of snapping. Truly disturbing.
The acting performances? Sir Anthony Hopkins in the role of Dr. Hannibal Lecter is awesome, there is no two ways about it. This man is one of the greatest actors that has ever lived and here in this role he is simply stunning. The calm placid, educated exterior given off by him which snaps within the blink of an eye to a wild eyed, seething madman, delighting in the pain and terror of others is truly frightening in the brilliance of its portrayal. This is matched by the creepy evilness of Gary Oldman as the disfigured millionaire. Oldman is another enormous talent in my opinion and no one plays this kind of freaky role better than he. He'll make your skin crawl, trust me. Jodie Foster is however sorely missed from the role of Clarice. Whilst the actress here puts in a good performance she is nowhere near the talent that Foster undoubtably is. Something just doesn't click with her and she is the only weak point in the entire movie.
Special effects here are also brilliant, like I said, some truly stomach churning scenes made even more so by the brilliant special effects employed. I want to talk about them, some scenes literally burn themselves into your memory, but to do so would be to spoil their impact upon viewing of the movie. Just horrible. Just delightful.
Scripting, camerawork, direction, lighting, sound...blah, blah, blah...you won't hear a bad thing said about this movie from me. I saw it at the cinema on the day it was released so that I wouldn't have my viewing pleasure tainted by everyone telling me all about it the next day after they had seen it. It blew me away and I think most people left the cinema somewhat stunned. Later you read people saying it wasn't that good an they weren't shocked by it, but there were enough gasps and sharp intakes of breath to say that perhpas this isn't quite true. Maybe its not as psychologically disturbing as The Silence Of The Lambs was, but its certainly close, if maybe this time it the gore and the threat of what is next going to assault your senses which carries it off. Don't watch this alone.
