There was some hype last year that this movie was not going to match the success of its predecessor, 'The Silence of the Lambs' because Jodie Foster was not going to reprise her role as Special Agent Clarice Starling.
I was actually quite skeptical myself and wondered if this sequel would do nothing more than feed off the success of the original movie. Fortunately, as soon as Anthony Hopkins made his appearance in Hannibal, it became clear to me that this was not going to be a weak stepchild to the original film. This was going to be Sir Anthony Hopkins’ movie and it really didn’t matter who played in the role as FBI agent Starling.
This sequel starts seven years after Dr. Hannibal Lecter’s (Sir Anthony Hopkins) escape from FBI custody. It has been seven years since FBI agent Clarice Starling (played by Julianne Moore) interviewed Dr. Lecter, and she has since progressed on a successful career of her own. Dr. Lecter retreated to a quiet, semi-normal life in Italy, pursuing his own interests in the world of art. But Starling has never forgotten her encounters with the doctor.
In this film, we are introduced to Dr. Lecter’s first victim, an outrageously wealthy businessman who, in his youth, was horribly disfigured. Now in his old age, he is obsessed with obtaining his revenge against Dr. Lecter and craftily uses Clarice Starling as the bait to draw Dr. Lecter out of hiding.
What made this movie enjoyable for me is that the audience was able to see some of the quality traits that Dr. Lecter possessed that make him an almost likable anti-hero; his is refined, extremely intelligent, witty, and impeccably tuned to a god-like notion of justice.
Sir Anthony Hopkins was great as usual and definitely gives an outstanding performance as Dr. Lector.
This is a great movie and I highly recommend it.
