I am always dubious about going to see a film after I have already read the book but as I read it over a year ago, it was not clear in my mind so I did not go in with any preconceptions. I think Julianne Moore was an excellent choice to play Clarice, with a tough act to follow, originally being played by Jodie Foster. She is tough yet somehow vulnerable, always loyal to the FBI despite being oppressed by crooked agents higher up in the force. However, Anthony Hopkins, I feel, did not live up to his original performance, there is a certain element of tongue in cheek about it. This was also true in the original but by this time the character of Hannibal has become so familiar that he doesn't inspire the same chill as he once did. The real bad guy of the film is played by an unrecognisable Gary Oldman, who is pursueing Hannibal for revenge. The makeup is brilliant but the character inneffective as a really threatening villain, being that he is crippled and so obsessed with revenge as to make him desperate rather than calculating. All in all the film lacked suspense; there was plenty of blood and gore if you like that kind of thing, but very little to feed the mind, so to speak. I think I'll pass on dessert thanks.

Welcome to Ciao ! Good review - it was nice to see a first opinion actually based on the product rather than some short paragraph that tells you nothing at all. Well done - look forward to the next one !

good first op - thanks. One little tip - if you space out your paragraphs they will be easier to read on screen. Thanks Claire

Advantages: Gruesome, eerie, and Anthony Hopkins in all his brilliance! Disadvantages: Has a sort of comical side to it, not as much a thriller as Silence of the Lambs.
