The plot
Jed Cooper (Eastwood) is an ex lawman who buys a small herd of cattle. Unknown to him the cattle are stolen and their true owner has been murdered. A posse of nine men capture Cooper and accuse him of rustling and murder. Rather than bother with a legal arrest and trial they resort to lynching Cooper. He is rescued just in time by a passing US Marshal and taken to the territorial judge at Fort Grant. There he is found innocent and offered a job of a US Marshal (as he now has no money or cattle). He sets of to bring in the men who hanged him.
Some of the best (and thought provoking) scenes are the verbal confrontations between Cooper and Judge Fenton (Pat Hingle) about hanging and how ridged and cut throat justice had to be in those days. The ending also show that there is a difference between justice and the law (in relation to one of the men who hanged Cooper).
I won't tell you any more of the plot as there would be no point in getting the film.
The cinematogrophy and costumes are excellent. The acting supports Clint Eastwood well and as for his acting Clint is Clint
The only other thing to say this is a hidden gem of a film. Not too bloody with a small sub plot and a love interest all linked together. Rated 18 it is a film almost everyone will enjoy. Whether your into westerns or action films add this to your collection and you won't be disappointed.
