Its funny just recently my taste in actors has changed.. A year ago I wouldn't have gone to see a film with Will Smith impurely because I couldn't stand him, but some how I now do now like his acting.. Funny that.. So when my boyfriend asked me to go see Hancock with him I was actually slightly excited, as from the trailers it looks like a really funny film.. I was left wondering if I was going to be disappointed..?
But I wasn't..!
The Film
At ninety minutes long it is not the most lengthy film, but it does not skimp on the drama or comedy. Released on July 2nd both in the United kingdom and the United States, it was one of the biggest box office smashes of recent films making a cool $107.3 million in the opening weekend, and in the K it grossed at around $19 million..! Proof enough that this film is a hit..!
So, Who's in Hancock?
The film directed by Peter Berg stars;
Will Smith
- plays John Hancock, is an alcoholic, hobo(!) with an attitude problem..! Super hero he may be but his personal skills leave a lot to be desired..!
Jason Bateman - plays Ray Embrey, a PR assistant who is looking for sponsors for his campaign and just ends up in the path of n on coming train leaving him at the mercy of Hancock..!
Charlize Theron - plays Mary Embrey, Rays wife… With some secrets of her own..!
Synopsis
The character played by Will Smith - John Hancock, is a down - and -out scruffy guy in a beanie hat. A superhero with an attitude. Despite his best intentions to save the world and lives of those in Los Angeles, his attempts have cost him and the state dearly. The public give him an ultimatum, pay up and go to court or move to another city..! There's only one man who can persuade him to do the right thing, and that is Ray Embrey, the guy he saved from certain death whilst stuck on a railway crossing.. Feeling as though he owes him his life he decided to change Hancock's image once and for all.. In a vein attempt to be able to change Hancock's public image Ray decides Hancock should go to prison and prove just how much he is needed in Los Angeles.. Its not long before the city realise quite how much they need him, when he is called upon to save a police officer in a hostage situation. Once again a hero, things seem unsettled..
The Best Bits
From the trailer you have probably seen some of the funny bits.. But trust me there is more..!
It seems Hancock has a thing for threatening to shove peoples heads up others arses.. Well.. Not wishing to spoil it for anyone.. But he does in prison..!
As in the trailer the throwing the evil kid in the air seems funny.. On a big screen its hilarious..
As is John Hancock's dislike of people calling him an 'asshole,' dare you call him it and risk been thrown thousands of miles in the air as a result..!
Its impossible to write all the funny parts down and ruin the film for you, but it is hilarious!!!
My Opinion
As I said before I never expected to like a movie with Will Smith in, but I have been surprised by actors before and I certainly have this time..! Will definitely fills the role of Hancock really well, his natural comedic nature does make the character seem even more real. Charlize Theron, does play a good Mary, but considering her obvious acting skills her part is a little small for the first part of the film. Jason Bateman, plays Ray really well but sometimes he does seem a little over shadowed by Will Smith's character.
The film is so funny, there are so many points in the film when most if not all of the audience were all thinking the same thing.. It was usually ouch, as someone's head got rammed up someone's ass, or Hancock picking up a truck spinning it around spiking it on the top f a building causing millions of dollars of damage..! These moments are the time when we all laughed and all gasped..
To be honest I haven't seen a film I like this much since I saw Cloverfield, but that is a totally different genre.. For the comedy value and skin tight suits this film has to be on of the biggest block busters of the summer. Surprisingly I heard that they are thinking of doing a sequel to this film , which I'm not sure would work, it seems to have been written to a concluding end, but I guess we will see..!
How could I forget..! The gigantic whale Hancock flings into the sea..!
