Halloween came out way back in 1978 and terrified a nation. Nothing matched it's originality and suspense. Two decades followed along with 5 sequels which never quite captured the feeling or terror of the original until 1998's release of Halloween H20. It gave the series the kick it needed and gave it back it's credibility.
Around 1996 someone mentioned the date to Jamie Lee Curtis and she realised that 1998 would be her twentieth anniversary of being in the movies with Halloween being her first big screen debut. She thought to herself, 'Hmm, I'm still in the business, i can still get a job.' She came up with the idea of a big showdown between her and Michael. A twenty year anniversary movie. She took her idea, originally, to John Carpenter who turned her down so she went to Kevin Williamson (writer of Scream) and told him, 'Your gonna write it, I'm gonna star in it and it's gonna be great!' And great it was to be...
The beginning sets the terrifying tone for the rest of the movie. Michael Myers (The series bad guy) breaks into Nurse Whittington's (Marion Chambers from Halloween 1 and 2) home and takes files on Laurie Strode who has been presumed dead in an automobile accident.
But Laurie Strode is alive and well, now being the headmistress of a posh, secluded private school in Northern California. She has changed her name to Keri Tate and gone into hiding, still being tormented by the 20 year old memories of Michael Myers. She now has a son, John (Josh Hartnett) who is helping her the best he can to deal with her problems.
It is October 31'st and a school trip to Yosemite national park has been planned for the schools students including John but he has other plans with his girlfriend Molly (Michelle Williams) and two other friends to stay behind in the school secretly and have a good time.
But it's not long before Myers tracks his long lost sister and that's where the real entertainment begins. A full 40 minutes of pure terror and suspense follows with Michael chasing them throughout the school trying to claim his last life...Laurie Strode.
One of the best parts of this movie is when Michael and Laurie finally come face to face through a window in a door which will give you the creeps for a long time.
But the point to this movie is that Laurie stops being the stalked and becomes the stalker. To finally face her monster and deal with him once and for all. The scene where she finally decides to stop running and goes after Michael is one of best moments, possibly the greatest, in horror movie history.
I say that the running time is a dis-advantage but i'm not so sure. It might be for some but i think it's perfect. It's fast-paced, to the point, incredibly entertaining and incredibly scary. This is one anniversary you should definately NOT ignore. If you buy one horror movie in your lifetime, buy this. The ending could have been the perfect ending to the series, giving it closure but unfortunately, after H20's huge success, another movie was called for (the dire, dismal Halloween Resurrection) which completely ruins everything that H20 stood for but i still consider this the last great Halloween movie and always will.
