For information, my DVD version of this film is the directors cut edition, Halloween Uncut. Effectively the same movie, but the cover and features may differ a tad.
So Rob Zombie Directs this movie, which is a re-imagining of the original story rather than another tired sequel. I liked this idea and was curious from the start.
So the story goes that Michael Myers killed his family when he was a youngster, all but his baby sister. He then escapes from the assylum where he is kept, and tracks down his sister, who is now in high school.
I was pretty prepared for lots of blood and guts, as in the other Haloween movies, but was hoping that, under Robs Direction, the movies could become as spine tingling as they were originally, as they had become so commercialised, slasher flicks and I was becoming more and more disappointed with them.
So I tucked myself in bed with some popcorn and a big blanket, and began to watch.
From start to finish, I couldnt take my eyes off the wonderful cinematography, the angles that it is shot from are amazing and have the effect of making people (as in Michael) bigger and more daunting.
I liked how the colours changed and things became darker, during the unpleasant parts of the movie, and the fact that, stragely, Michaels face seems to have expression, despite it being a mask.
There is more detail in his first murders than the original, and this answered questions as to his relationships with the people in his life at that time. I also felt that, although this is supposedly a remake, it is a completely different movie from the original. Yes the rough story is the same, but it is told by a different storyteller and this shows.
The pace of the movie is ideal, slowed down at times just enough to catch up, and develop characters, pops in a bit of humour and lightness to keep it from being all out gore. It then quicken up and moves, almost at breakneck speed through some of the horrr scenes, yet did not feel rushed or that I had missed anything. Everything flowed, and seemed very natural.
The special effects are also pretty magnificent, everything looks very very real, and from the camera angles used, looks impossible to fake.
The yong actor who plays Michael Myers as a boy is amazing, his anger does not seem forced, and even during his, long periods of silence throughout the introduction, I feel that I am getting further into his character, and you can distinctly see him moving from someone who is, yes, a disturbed boy, into a completely cold and calculated killer.
The one thing that irritated me a little, and tends to with horror movies, is the necessity for 50% of the females to die half naked or having sex. It feels like an excuse for nudity and is not relevant to the plot, physical intimacy doesnt make him mad, they would die anyway so why does he always seem to creep up on them when theyve got their kit off? It is as really insignificant grumble to have though to be honest.
In short, I loved this movie, and feel that it should be as much of a classic as the original. The popcorn went uneaten, although I did hid in the blanket a couple of times, exactly what you expect with an amazing horror film.
I also had a peek through the extras on the DVD, of which there are plenty and they are all very interesting, and gave me a new insight on the movie the second time around. There is a feature about the many masks of Michael Myers and a Making of, both of which I really enjoyed. They are usually not my thing, but are definately worth having a look at.
Of course, this is a horror, and is rated 18 for a reason, there is strong bloody violence and gore, as well as some pretty hot and heavy nudity.
