With no special features on this dvd, its clear that the film can stand alone, in its own glory.
At the start of the film, the scenes are shot from 'Michael Myers' point of view, to introduce us to the character. With little or no light, a sense of forboding is created. This sets a president for most of the film. The horror truely starts at the beginning of the film, as a young Michael (6 years old) stabs his teenage sister to death. He is consequently sectioned.15 years later, he escapes from the high security mental hospital, to unleash terror on haddonfield...
Laurie (Jamie Lee Curtis) unwittingly becomes Michael's target, when she helps her father - an estate agent, by putting the keys of Michaels old house, under the mat. Little did she realise Michael had returned to his childhood home, and was watching her every move.As Michael stalks her to and from school, her friends become targets too.
The young girls, have plans to babysit that night. and are caught unaware as Michael plays mind games with the 3 girls before ultimately trying to brutally murder them. These teenage babysitters are the typical murder victims. They are too wrapped up in their own love lives (like most teenage girls *cough*) to notice anything strange. Their vulnerability show Myers to be seen as even more callous!! (If thats possible)
Laurie, the intelligent, and sensible 1 of the girls, and by no coinsidence, the heroin of the film manages to escape the clutches of this psychopathic murderer. However, this is no easy job, as the two main characters play the roles of 'cat and mouse'.
The jumpy nature of this film really adds to the suspense created by the unpredictable plot. This can be seen throughout the film, just ask yourself........."is he dead?!" The seemingly indestructable nature of the 'villain' Myers increase the horror factor, since the audience begin to believe that it will never be over ( no - not the film!) and the murder, destruction and chaos will continue forever.
With the exception of 2 5 second clips, Michael is covered from head to foot, with a trench coat, and a ghostly white mask. This makes him seem almost other-worldly. The majority of these scenes shows an incomplete view of michael, to add to his mystique. Long and medium shots are used to show Michael with little human characteristics. There is also a very big ebsence of speech by Michael. Again, this adds to his mystique as it gives the audience no insight into his thoughts or feelings.
The acting is amazing, and very believable (but what do you expect from such a good cast?!) The portrayal of the characters really allows us (the audience) to 'get to know' them and understand their way of thinking
The film truely is fantastic, probably best viewed on halloween with the lights turned out. Although, I wouldnt advise this for those with a nervous disposition. Definitely worth watching. Hopefully, you'll enjoy it as much as I do
Halloween is the first in a mini series of films, the second of which is 'Halloween H20' this is also a great film, which is set 20 years later than the first film - I digress! The point Im trying to make, is that...without a great plot, acting and directing the film wouldnt have had the success it did. If this film wasnt successful then there wouldnt be sequels hence proving my point of how good this film is! :-)

Nice review, also liked the fact you didn't mix your words and got to the point. I agree that this is a landmark horror movie but cant say the many sequels have lived up to the original - Eamo

Nice review, agree that this one is a landmark, though alot of the many sequels haven't really captured the feeling of this one. Sadly because of this movies success we have countless rip-offs in other horror movies - Eamo
Advantages: Score, FX, Acting, Not A Straight-forward Re-Make... Disadvantages: Acting, Repetitive Obscenities, It Will Always Remain Inferior To The Original...
