How many times can I say it, I LOVE HORROR FILMS!! But mainly I love the 70/80’s classics. I’ve been umming and ahhing over buying this as I really want the DVD box set of it (6 discs, limited addition <does Homer style type drool thing>) but after being in HMV and seeing buy 1 get 1 free and it being £12.99 I thought I had to cave. So, here is my opinion on the first and one of the best horror films (maybe ever?), John Carpenter’s, ‘Halloween’, M xx
• What’s the film about? Ok, forgive me for being rude, but if you have never heard of this film, ‘what planet are you on?!’ This is an all time classic with the original scream queen herself, ‘Jamie Lee Curtis’. Ok, I know someone of you may (still) be looking a little quizzed, let me refresh your mind. The film is about a little boy named Michael Myers, who witnesses (at 6 years old) his sister (A teenager – come on, all teenagers in these movies have sex then die! That’s a rule right there) having sex and brutally murders her on guess what day, yep you’ve guessed it… Halloween. He then gets locked up in a mental hospital (Smith's Grove Warren County Sanatorium) where he is a patient of Dr Loomis. The doctor seems to be the only one who can see how evil the boy is and keeps a record of his thoughts. Surprise surprise Michael escapes from the mental hospital 15 years later and heads for the one place he knows… home (Or otherwise known as Haddonfield). Dr Loomis witnessed Michael’s escape and after working with him for so many years knows that he will kill again. After seeing our scream queen dropping a key into the house he takes a liking to her and follows her and her friends for the day till the evening. This
is far from a normal night of baby sitting or trick-or-treating! As with all my movie ops I don’t like to give a lot of the plot away in case you haven’t seen the film and intend too. This being an all time classic and one most have seen still does not change this rule. It’s a great film and if you haven’t seen it, you should!
• Who’s in it and what not? Laurie’s friend in the list as they do not play huge parts other than being murdered. The cast are as follows, there isn’t a huge list to be honest and I haven’t included Donald Pleasence plays Dr. Samuel 'Sam' J. Loomis. Michael’s doctor from the day he was locked up and a key figure in this film and the Halloween’s to come after it. His character is strong, yet he is well natured and gentle. I really think he comes across as a child psychologist. I don’t feel his part in this film was as strong as the follow up but I did feel he acted it well and convincingly. Jamie Lee Curtis, the greatest scream queen plays Laurie Strode. An innocent, virginal goody two shoes. Her friends joke on her goodness and niceness. Little do they know how strong she is after her battles with Michael in this and other Halloweens. Jamie plays a fantastic character, she is such a strong willed woman it’s almost as if the role was written for her. She’s believable, strong willed and yet naive at the same time. By all means she may be the leading lady in the film, but she is also the strongest character and the best actress aswell! Tony Moran plays the sick and twisted Michael Audrey Myers (age 21), our villain and psychopath. Similar to Jason Voohries, Michael is the strong and VERY silent type, so Tony has to portray everything in gestures movements etc. You can’t see his face either due to the whitened ‘William Shatner’ mask with darkened hair. All in all Tony has a big job to pull off and does this well. The way he walks moves and kills is an art form. You can see his power and strength but also the danger and evilness. A great cast for a great character and one of the most well known Horror Movie characters of all time. Will Sandin has a short but sweet role playing Michael Audrey Myers (age 6). We see him murder his sister through the eyes of his clown mask. You can’t really comment on his acting much as he doesn’t need to say much or do anything, just pull a very shocked look on his face at the end. A character that’s needed to set the film up with some back ground info but to the honest not really worth commenting on other than that (Sorry Will Sandin). The film was made in one of the greatest decades for horror (1978) by the very famous John Carpenter (You may remember his other films like; The Fog, The Thing, They Live and of course all the other Halloween’s). In the UK the film was certified an X (Or 18 certificate), meaning it was unsuitable to watch less you were an adult. Personally I don’t think the film is that graphic, there’s not that much bad language considering and the sex scenes aren’t exactly graphic either. Still, there is some blood and interesting death scenes which is where I think the film gained the 18 certification. Lastly the film has an approximate running time of 91 minutes.
• Are they any DVD extras? Original Theatrical Trailers – What got everyone to the cinema in the first place! TV Spots – Not as good as the radio spots but worth a look. Radio Spots – I have never seen radio spots on a DVD before, but this was a nice touch. I’d go as far to say that they should still do radio spots on films like this. It would make me want to see the film more than the trailer! Talent Bios – Bios on the cast and some of the crew. Still and Poster Gallery – Self explanatory really. Shots taken from the film. Can’t say I see why they put these on the discs, they do nothing for me. Behind the Scenes still Gallery – More stills taken from the film. Halloween Unmasked 2000 – This was worth the £12.99 on its own. It’s really for the die hard fans of Halloween. It tells you a lot of background info and is with real interviews of people who worked on the film. Trivia – I really liked this section. Granted it’s a ‘read only’ bit but there are some funny facts you learn about Halloween and the follow ups and it’s worth a 5 minute read!
• Where can I buy it? My copy is the double disc limited edition copy. As I mentioned before I bought my copy from HMV on a boy one get one free. I don’t think that offers on at the moment as they seem to be having huge sales. Still, I had a look about online and found it for the following prices in the following places;
Play.com (http://www.play.com) £12.99 including postage and packing. Pricestorm (http://www.pricestorm.com) £12.99 including postage and packing. Choicesdirect (http://www.choicesdirect.com) £14.99 including postage and packing.
You can also get it in a lot of high street shops like HMV, Woolworth’s, Andy’s Records and some discount DVD stores.
• My final Conclusion on ‘Halloween’. It’s a classic, how can I not like it! The characters are great, well acted and the storyline, although not believable is a gripping one. To this day and even after seeing it so many times it still makes me jump. It has the scary freaky factor without making you dream about it and scaring you. Well, in my case anyway! Then we move onto (once more – sorry) our scream queen Jamie. She is brilliant and if I can look half as good as her at her age, I’ll be a very happy lady!! She really does play Laurie well though and without her the film would struggle. I can honestly say I couldn’t think of another person who could have played the role aswell. Putting the film aside, the DVD version has some great extras aswell and they are worth the £12.99 I paid for this without the film. So I was really pleased with them and there’s still a few bits I haven’t seen yet. Overall I love this film. Its got everything I want in a horror film and more. If you haven’t seen it, watch it! If you like it, buy a copy on DVD it’s reasonable if you look about, most of all though, it’s a classic and deserves to be remembered, so if you haven’t seen it for a while, why not check it out. It gets 10 out of 10 from me (A first I do believe) even with the dodgy mask Michael wears! Thanks for reading, Mel xx

Great review, excellent film! Noticed you didn't think a lot of the soundtrack though... thought that was a very memorable soundtrack, even if it wasn't "quality" music like some other films. Would say Sweet Dreams, but Spooky Nightmares is more like it! Nice to see another horror movie fan! -Am

have to watch it Mel too many scary movies will give you nightmares..opps too late:)lenny
Advantages: Score, FX, Acting, Not A Straight-forward Re-Make... Disadvantages: Acting, Repetitive Obscenities, It Will Always Remain Inferior To The Original...
