made Halloween is the movie that put director John Carpenter on the map as a viable filmmaker. An exercise in simple pure horror Halloween takes us into the world of a mad killer Michael Myers who at a very young age stabbed his older sister to death. Locked away for many years in a mental hospital Michael escapes one night and returns to his home to continue his killing spree. Jamie Lee Curtis in her first role plays the resourceful babysitter who is chased by the killer on Halloween night. Produced for very little money and a tight shooting schedule Halloween was a stunning success when it was released. Written by John Carpenter and his longtime producer Debra Hill the film set both their careers on fire with both of them working together many times over the next 25 years. The film also made a star out of Jamie Lee Curtis and turned the slasher movie into a viable successful genre. Halloween has been copied parodied and even turned into a franchise of its own but the original is still considered the best of the bunch. Halloween was John Carpenter's first foray into horror and remains the standard to which all other modern horror films are measured.

My husband and me decided to rent a DVD out from blockbusters. I saw this film and really wanted to watch it, as I had enjoyed most of the others. My husband took quite a bit of convincing to get this, as he said once you have seen one you have seen them all. The power of a woman's persuasion soon won him over and he got the film loll.
The plot -------------
Young Michael Myers is a sick child, who first starts out by killing small defenceless animals and keeping photos of them. He then starts on bigger things like his family, all except his mother and baby sister, after the killings he is committed to Smith's Grove Sanatorium. After being there for roughly 17 years under the care of Doctor Loomis, he manages to escape and returns to his hometown of Haddonfield in search of one of the only people he has ever cared about, his baby sister Laurie Strode. He will kill anybody who gets in his path. What will the fate of his own sister be, and what will be the fate of him?
The acting ---------------
The acting of the young Michael Myers was great, he did not really have much to say in his scripts but the way he played the part was superb, when you looked into his eyes the boy did look really evil. You could actually imagine the young boy played by Daeg Faerch would be capable of murder. He also covers his face up a lot with the masks he wears. The older Michael Myers face was only seen on odd occasion, and never spoke, but the way the older Michael was played was still good, Tyler Mane played the older Michael. I think both sets of eyes were so full of evil. The actors might not like that though loll. I think both actors were very well picked for this film.
Malcolm McDowell, who played Doctor Loomis, played his role well but I must say I did prefer the original Doctor Loomis. He still played his part well, but I did not think his fear seemed genuine, not like in the original films when played by Donald Pleasance. That maybe just me though loll.
The rest of the cast, murdered and living ones all played each part well, the fear that they had when Michael appeared made you really believe that he was going to kill them. They made the film seem more real to life and a lot scarier. Also I did find that both of Michael's sisters were well picked, as soon as I saw his sister I knew it was her, as they all looked very similar.
My opinion ----------------
Well to say my husband did not want to get this film, even he really enjoyed it. The blood and gore was great. I really love scary films. Although in honesty I have not watched one that scares me, although it did make me cringe in places. The killings look so real, and the music to go with it makes it seem scarier. I was surprised that the film ran through the whole life of Michael Myers, from his childhood, to his adult life, and all of his killing sprees. A whole life shown in one film, I thought it was a great story to do rather than loads of different sequels.
I really did enjoy everything about this film, although some people may not like it. There is excessive language used though especially at the start of the film, but I found that more funny than anything, because of the context it was used it.
I would not say this is a film I would watch again but I did really enjoy it, and I am glad I have seen it. I did find it better than other Halloween films, but maybe because it ran through his whole life and it was more up to date. I would say this is a definite must see for all horror film lovers.

...is the directors cut edition, Halloween Uncut. Effectively the same movie, but the cover and features may differ a tad. So Rob Zombie Directs this movie, which is a re-imagining of the original story rather than another tired sequel. I liked this idea and was curious from the start. So the story goes that Michael Myers killed his family when he was a youngster, all but his baby sister. He then escapes from the assylum where he is kept, and tracks ... ...I was pretty prepared for lots of blood and guts, as in the other Haloween movies, but was hoping that, under Robs Direction, the movies could become as spine tingling as they were originally, as they had become so commercialised, slasher flicks and I was becoming more and more disappointed with them. So I tucked myself in bed with some popcorn and a big blanket, and began to watch. From start to finish, I couldnt take my eyes off the wonderful cinematography, ...

the damn thing is.
Certain scenes in Halloween will, I dare say, hang around in the mind for as long as I'm fit to remember anything. The ghostly face of Myers rising out the black of a darkened back-seat is one such moment. Much of this has to do with John Carpenter's oft-praised use of widescreen photography. No inch of screen-space is wasted. Myers haunts the furthest edges of the frame, appearing by this or that hedgerow or gatepost, stalking the periphery of the image. Needless to say - it's a Widescreen purchase. Avoid any panned and scanned variants like the plague.
Halloween has been issued on DVD more times than just about any other film I can think of, and the most recent 25th anniversary 2-disc set (or 3, I believe, if you pick it up from HMV), is the best one to go for, complete as it is with an array of deleted scenes ...

Advantages: A timeless classic of a Teen Slasher film Disadvantages: None that I can think of
With today being Halloween I thought that I'd write a nice topical review of one of my favourite horror films of all time, this of course being John Carpenter's 'Halloween', a film that I'm sure most of you have seen by now given that it tends to be shown on one channel or another pretty much every year. Tonight the film can be found on BBC1 at a quarter to midnight, so for those of you that have not yet seen the film then there is no excuse not to now. While researching on the internet to see if the version that I have of the DVD is still available, I found that it was actually deleted a couple of months back. I wasn't particularly shocked to find this seen as the version I have was an apparent 'Limited Edition', however after searching around I found that the American version can be bought online from one website for £11.95 which I ...

but excells as the movie progresses. I do believe she is under-rated.
So all in all, I actually do enjoy this movie. I also adore the original movie and don't think it can ever or will ever be replaced but a remake was the only way to bring this series back to life and it well and truly is. After an incredible earning of money watch this space for Halloween 2! I think that it is actually possible to improve on the original Halloween 2 so it may be something to look forward to for horror fans.
♥ The DVD Extras ♥
My guess is that there will be a double disc edition released around Halloween time for us so best to wait for that to be honest but completists will always want them all! It's not too bad here though...There are a good number of deleted scenes which include Adrienne Barbeau's role which was taken from the final ...

Zombie may not be able to match the stalk 'n' menace of Carpenter's steadicam original, but when the Big Z's knife hits the right groove, he cuts to the dark heart of the Myers legend (BBC, 14/12/2007)
Zombie's version offers an extended prologue that fills in the formative days of Myers' psychosis (Entertainment Weekly, 14/02/2008)
It's relentlessly malevolent... Zombie's production design laces it with a truly nasty edge (Total Film, 14/02/2008)
DVD Description
The early 2000s have seen a string of big-budget remakes of classic horror films. In addition to THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and THE HILLS HAVE EYES, John Carpenter's benchmark slasher flick HALLOWEEN has been given a new-millennial overhaul. At the helm of the project sits rocker Rob Zombie, whose previous films, HOUSE OF 1,000 CORPSES and THE DEVIL'S REJECTS, brought a fan's touch and an auteur's vision to the director's chair. While Zombie's HALLOWEEN is faithful to Carpenter's vision, there are some obvious changes, the most pronounced of these being the substantial focus on Michael Myers's childhood. The film posits Michael (played by a creepily vacant Daeg Faerch) as a troubled child made all the worse by a horrible home life--wonderfully illustrated via William Forsythe's performance as Deborah Myers's boyfriend--and constant abuse at school. Zombie paints Michael's pain with palpable grit and sleaze, but he isn't out to put our culture on the couch--he simply wants to show Michael killing his family. With the exception of Michael's therapy sessions while incarcerated, the film, post-massacre, stays loyal to the original. Zombie's film is clearly the work of a filmmaker who knows and loves the genre. The director's signature is stamped all over HALLOWEEN (most notably in the use of grainy home movie footage and a smokin' classic rock soundtrack), although remnants of Carpenter's brilliant original still remain. When it comes to remakes, it's hard to ask for much more.
