I remember going to see the preview of Halloween 4 on Halloween night – great PR stunt – and at the time had only seen the first movie and not the other sequels. The production values of the film and how different they were from the cheap and nasty Friday 13th movies instantly surprised me. This combined with the large amounts of fog and the subtle soundtrack helped the film develop a dark and foreboding atmosphere.
The film opens at quite a pace with Michael being moved from a high security facility to a medium one. After all, the guy has been in a coma for years, how dangerous can he be?
Within minutes of the film starting, a gruesome struggle in the ambulance – which you know is going to happen – results in Michael disappearing off into the sunset.
Before long Dr Loomis is off on his trail and the story shifts to Haddonfield where Michael’s niece is now living with foster parents. The story progresses at a suitably engrossing pace with murders left right and centre, plus lots of spooky goings on.
The one thing that sticks in the mind after watching the film, is the subtlety of some of the scenes with Michael Myers. For example, the white mask in the background and the silhouette in the mist. All of these provide Michael Myers with a mystical unnerving quality that makes him rise head and shoulders beyond other horror creations. With Michael there are no wise cracks (as with Freddy Krueger) or any signs of vulnerability (such as the masked killers in the Scream Trilogy).
Michael Myers is truly an enemy to be afraid of!

I think this ws pretty good too. It's a shame though that in the end Myers became so unscary as all the mystery of him was taken away - H20 is a good movie but you still see him too much. As for Friday the 13th Part 9, I've only just maged to get hold of it from Blackstar, as it has been deleted in this country - I'm gonna try and complete the series and get round to writing a review sometime soon. All I can say about Jason X is oh dear - things seem to have dipped to a new low plot wise - maybe the David Croneneberg cameo will elevate it though. DanClegg
