Well this DVD is one which I bought back in March as I really wanted to watch it as it looked very good. I did manage to watch it once then leant it out to my Mother in Law and finally got it back last week! I did re-watch the film and thoroughly enjoyed it just as much as the first time.
The film is about a young girl called Tracy Turnblad, played by Amanda Bynes, who loves to dance. She and her best friend Penny rush out of school every day to get back home in time to watch the Corney Collins show. The show is full of music and dancers, Tracy dreams of being one of the dancers on the show and when it is announced that one of the girls is going to be away for 9 months and their will be an audition for a replacement she asks Penny to help her get to the audition.
Once at the audition Tracy is told that she is too fat to be on the show and she is very sad about this, when she arrives back at school she is given detention for skipping class. When Tracy goes to detention she finds something amazing as the room is full of black people who are all dancing around enjoying themselves. Tracy joins in and makes great friends with the others.
Tracy is taken back to one of the boys parents music shops where Tracy is introduced to Maybelle who is the presenter of the Corney Collins show once a month on Negro day. Tracy thinks that it is unfair that they are not allowed to dance with the white people and says that if she ever gets on the show she will try to make it change to let all dance together.
When Tracy again joins the detention room at school Link Larson, played by Zac Efron, who also dances on the Corney Collins show spots her and sees how much talent she has. Eventually Link talk the shows crazy and controlling manager, Played by Michelle Pfeiffer, around to let her dance on the show. Once Tracy is spotted on the show all of the girls watching take in instant liking to her and Tracy enlists her larger than life mother, played by John Travolta, to be her manager.
Tracy has finally made her dream come true by dancing on the Corney Collins show but now with the help of her friends will she be able to mix the black and white dancers and stop the segregation?
I absolutely loved this film. Yes it is a musical which my hubby was not keen on but even he did have a giggle at some of the parts in the film and he also had a smile on his face at the end of the film.
The story line was very good and I was glad to see the star of the show being a plump girl who has to battle against the odds to realise her dream instead of a stick thin thing who would have had no problems getting on the dancing show. I also liked the way that they showed the struggle that black people went through to get treated as equals and this was dealt with very well in the film.
John Travolta played his part of the Tracy's mother exceptionally well and he really did look quite good as a woman. He added just the right amount of humour to the character and he also managed to pull of his songs, singing them as a female.
All of the songs in the film were very catchy and all of the vocals from everyone involved were very good. They all managed to add an extra bit to the film and the dance routines were very good considering it was set in the 60's. It was quite funny at times watching the actors jiving and doing the old routines.
The supporting characters were all very good and I felt that Queen Latifah was great in her characters and she portrayed her larger than life personality very well which gave her character a bit more depth. Christopher Walken also played that role of Tracy's father very well.
Michelle Pfeiffer was a surprise for me in the film as I did not know she was in it as I think she played the power mad studio manager part exceptionally well and also thought she looked fantastic for her age!
The DVD which I have is the 2 disc Shake and Shimmy edition.

The DVD has a running time of 112 minutes which I feel is just the right length as the film moves at a good pace from start to finish. The film was Produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron and was Directed by Adam Shankman. The film has a PG certificate which I feel is very suitable.
I paid around about £10 for my copy back in March but this will be much cheaper now. I do recommend this film to all who like musicals that also have a good believable story.

...what I was expecting!
Hairspray tells us the story of Tracy Turnblad, a young pleasantly-plump teenage girl living in Baltimore, Detroit in the 1960's. Tracy loves to dance so when the opportunity arises for her to perform on local hit TV show The Corny Collins Show, Tracy takes it and becomes the star of the show. But Tracy wants more - she wants equality on the show for her black friends, but the producer of the show doesn't want it. Are Tracy's ... ...a good fun film, and Hairspray delivers on all counts. It has many songs within which get you tapping your feet and nodding your head to the beat. The cast belt out all the numbers, with Blonsky, Pfeiffer and Efron as stand-out singing performers in the film. However, it is not just the fun element which makes this film work. Within the fun, dresses, hair-dos and dancing there is a serious message throughout, one which is just a relevant today as ...

...release of a film called Hairspray starring Divine, Ricki Lake (before the chat show fame), Sonny Bono and Deborah Harry amongst others. I have to confess that this is one of my favourite films and one that for me has stood the test of time, to the point where in my mind at least it has become a classic.

Baltimore is still a relatively small city, off the beaten track and the local TV station is the main form of entertainment in the town. In particular one show called The Corney Collins Show features a mixture ...

Advantages: Great song and dance numbers performed by an enthusiastic cast. Disadvantages: A lack of character development and emotional depth.
It's 1962 and all Baltimore teen Tracy Turnblad wants is to appear on the "Corny Collins Show". But can a chubby girl from the wrong side of the tracks really make it onto TV? ...to correct a misconception. Hairspray is not exactly a remake of the John Waters film starring Ricki Lake. What it actually is, is based on a Broadway musical based on the original film, making this a distant relative rather than a sister product. She also sets about changing racial views and getting Negro day abolished so that the kids may all dance together - an idea that is wildly applauded by the show host, but infuriates Velma. It leads to a clash with the law, and a ...

My opinion
The DVD sounds like it's going to be over an hour of great footage. In reality all is not what it seems. The Nirvana songs listed are mainly radio recordings, with actors pretending to be them. There are only four live videos with the actual band. The interviews are with Granda Cobain and Alice Wheeler which aren't the best choice of people. If you are a fan who has to have every piece of merchandise and every recording, then this is useful but if not I would recommend another. I am a huge fan of the music but as I am running low on cash I have to be careful. I wish I had gone for something else, and chances are, you will too.

Advantages: easy to follow and keep up with Disadvantages: only half of dvd is aerobic the rest is toning and stretching
I brought this dvd and love it. I have several Rosemary Conley exercise dvds but this one is a favourite of mine. It is easy to follow. The pace is good and perfect for most fitness levels. There is also a chair workout for those less mobile.
I would definately recommend this and hope to be seeing results for myself shortly. This DVD can also be found in a triple back which includes two other dvds. The music isn't bad either - mostly pop and dance(which isn't usually my cup of tea!)
I tend to focus on the aerobic part of the dvd(1st half an hour) but the toning exercises are manageable and i try to do them 2-3 times a week. This is a perfect dvd to do at home as you can adapt the exercises to fit your space, i do some of them on the spot rather than travelling.

DVD Description
Baltimore, 1962. Ample, energetic teen Tracy Turnblad (Ricki Lake) wants nothing more than to get on hip local TV dance programme THE CORNY COLLINS SHOW. When she finally gets her way, her lively dance moves and bubbly personality are met with unexpected popularity, along with the ire of a fellow dancer, scheming Amber Von Tussle (Colleen Fitzpatrick). Furthermore, when she witnesses firsthand the terrible state of race relations in Baltimore, Tracy becomes an outspoken advocate for the de-segregation of THE CORNY COLLINS SHOW. John Waters's first PG-rated film is also his most sweet-natured and accessible. Based on his appreciation of the real-life 1960s Baltimore dance programme THE BUDDY DEANE SHOW, Waters's affection for the era and attention to authenticity shines through. Lake, in her first film performance, radiates charm and enthusiasm. Divine, in his last (dual) role, appears as both Tracy's mother, Edna, and dastardly TV station manager Arvin Hodgepile. As if that weren't enough, an inspired cast of cameos (Pia Zadora, Ric Ocasek, Waters himself) and a virtual instruction manual of faddish period dances and their accompanying songs serve only to make the deal even sweeter.
