Advantages: Fine acting, good special effects Disadvantages: Lack of DVD special features
A made for TV film adaptation of one of the classic novels of English Literature starring an American sit com star?time to switch off? Well you might have thought such a premise was bound to fail but in fact this adaptation isn?t that bad?.
Gulliver?sTravels is one of those books that everyone knows (or think they do) but I suspect very few have read. Some might have seen animated versions dealing with Gulliver?stravels to Lilliput but this is only part of the story. This adaptation produced by Channel 4 is actually quite accurate to the book and includes all the adventures that are mostly forgotten. There is a subplot or more accurately an overplot that is doesn't appear in the original book but aids the narrative of the TV adaptation but in terms of the details of the events this is probably the most faithful adaptation made so ...
Advantages: Very funny in places, decent storyline, great for kids Disadvantages: The songs!!! Aaaauuuurrrrrggghhhh!!!!!
Gulliver's Travels is, as I am sure you already know, an all-time classic novel by Jonathon Swift, and is one of the sharpest satirical novels ever written. There have been many film / TV versions, few of which have adhered closely to the original storyline. On a compilation we got recently for a bargain basement price, I came across this version. As far as following Swift's overall storyline goes you can forget it, but that doesn't stop it from being an enjoyable film.
Featuring Richard Harris (the few other actors in the film have such short parts that they're really not worth mentioning), who kids may recognise from the recent Harry Potter films, this version of Gulliver's Travels is notable for being one of the first films to ever mix live action and animation. The storyline revolves almost entirely around Gulliver's adventures ...
washed up on the shores of a mystical land - from then on, the film takes the form of Harris wandering about an empty set, surrounded by animated characters.
Had he not taken part in the phenomenally popular 'Harry Potter' films before his death in October 2002, I doubt this particular film would ever had seen it's way to DVD.
In the film, Harris, as Gulliver, befriends the Lilliputians (a race of minute people) gains their trust, however becomes embroiled in their 'local' politics - eventually he is confronted with a dilemma; honour his promise to the king, and help them overcome their enemies in a facile dispute, or find a way out of his obligations and let common sense prevail.
Harris struggles relentlessly to try and make something of his role, but the sheer limitations of the production never allow you to forget this is nothing ...
